Hi-Score Time

Postby lynchie137 » June 29th, 2021, 1:50 pm

A few days ago, I was playing Astroblast for the good ol' 2600 on my Stella emulator, using the mouse to replicate the paddle controls. Now, I don't know how accurate a mouse can replicate the analog feel of a good paddle controller ( I don't think anything can truly come close to doing that, by the way), but somehow I managed to set a new personal best high score playing the game that way as seen below. Usually, by using a D-pad or paddles and playing the game on the original hardware, I manage to score about 20-25 thousand points. Which for me is pretty good. But with the mouse, I more than doubled that. Which I must say I am quite proud of. This in turn leads me to ask you guys n gals if you set any personal bests in any old school games lately. If so, please share and also post a screen cap of said high score.

Anyway, here is my all time high score on Astroblast:

As someone who played this game recently I can attest that achieving a score this high takes not only a lot of skill but endurance as well!

Oh, definitely. No question about it. My right hand and wrist were really starting to cramp up after about 10-15 minutes or so due to being stuck in one fixed position. So after that one game I had to stop. That's not a problem with using a good controller, joystick or paddle, though. So with a bit of practice, i say that anybody can post a score like this..

A bit of advice, however. if you want to get a good score on Astroblast, do not, and I repeat do not try to play this on the Atari Flashback portable. Specifically the one that came out in 2017. For some reason they tried to emulate the paddle controls instead of the joystick controls for it, and I gotta say they did an absolutely abysmal job of it. It's bad enough that they have paddle games built into the unit and you have to play them using the D-pad. Which is never fun to begin with. And it just dosen't work well at all with Astroblast. There is just no precision or responsiveness to the controls, and I consider myself lucky to be able to break the 1000 point mark playing it on that little handheld. Why they decided to attempt to emulate the paddle controls with a D-pad I'll never know.... Oh well

I recently had my best score on Freeway on the 2600. I saved 22 chickens.

Nice job. I like that game. But I was never really all that good at it. I think my personal best was something like 15 or 16 chickens..
