Should I get a Polymega?

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 16th, 2022, 5:33 pm

I'm thinking about finally pulling the trigger on the Polymega base unit. CD systems are the most likely to have issues so this would go a long way towards future-proofing my collection.

Thought about the deluxe model but damn that is expensive.

One thing occurred to me however. I can only use the polymega controller with the base unit?

It’s nifty but I’m not sure what it really offers in value.

It’s not an FPGA solution that will offer extreme accuracy. It’s an emu box. I’m sure it’s a bit smoother in operation but just hooking up a small form fact PC tower with a DVD drive should cost less and offer potentially better emulation with powerful CPUs available. IF we’re talking CD systems.

Cartridges you are *supposed* to dump your own ROMs.

I like it. It’s neat. But I’d invest my money in Rhea or GDEMU or any Optical Drive Emulator that comes out the OG hardware let’s you know you’re getting the authentic experience.

Sounds pretty awesome. Just wish it had the Jaguar CD too

Are there ports to plug in the classic controllers?

I considered getting this as a gateway towards rebuilding my collection……

Until I realized that the hardware itself isn’t the issue, it’s the software. The games I want the most are the priciest, and game collecting became obnoxious during the pandemic!

It's by module. Buy the module for the system cartridges and the ports for controllers are built into the module itself. Look at their website and you can see plenty of examples.

I have the base unit and I love it. Works wonderfully. Especially Saturn games. I thought the base unit accepted other controllers, but I don't know for sure. I just use the controller that came with it. Still waiting to get some modules though.

I’m curious how well the light gun works. Is it optimized for modern led screens?
