Kung Fu Master for the 2600

Postby envytomdead » August 6th, 2022, 10:29 pm

I'm surprised the critic has never reviewed this port. I think it's a bit of gem in the 2600 library. What does everyone else think of this version?

wow you're right...it has to rank right up there with the top arcade conversions on the 2600

I'm pretty sure I have this so I'll need to get it reviewed! It's possible I confused it with Chuck Norris Kung Fu Superkicks.

It looks pretty darn good, but believe me, it plays like garbage. It's so stiff.

It was amazing when I only owned a 2600.

There's nothing else like it on the system. Reviewed only against the rest of the 2600 library, the only issue is how much it punishes mistakes.

If anything, I was disappointed playing the game on other platforms, because I expected it to push them just as hard.

Surprisingly good port. I have a really hard time executing jump kicks for some reason though. I mean, is it even possible to do so? Other than that, yeah, it's pretty good. Which makes me wonder why the 2600 port of Double Dragon released five years later wound up being so God awful...

There is no jump kick in the Atari 2600 version. And you have to move the joystick diagonally to throw punches.

It's good for Atari 2600 standards but that's about it.

Double Dragon is much more advanced than Kung Fu so any conversion on the Atari was going to be terrible. At least they tried.

Yeah, it's been one of the most surprising omissions in your Atari 2600 review lineup for a while. You have a Harmony cart, right? You could consider pairing it up with Universal Chaos, which is another arcade port for the 2600 you haven't reviewed, maybe the only non-homebrew arcade port left.

(It's a port in disguise, mind you -- it was a port of Targ but didn't get released as planned, either because of the crash or because it wasn't quite done. When it got picked up by Telegames, they released it under a different name to save money on licensing the Targ property, but it's Targ.)
