Early Nintendo Lock Out Measures

I've never played on a Famicom disk system, so I hadn't realized Nintendo used their loo, embossed on the diskette, as a quality control / piracy measure.

I also didn't realize Nintendo wihheld or threatened to withhold gamepaks to retailers selling Tengen games. I'd like to see if that is true - did Toys R Us sell Tengen?
