Colecovision controller alternatives?

Postby VideoGameCritic » March 29th, 2009, 6:28 pm

Were there ever any good third-party controllers made for the Colecovision?  The normal one is pretty uncomfortable, and the Super Action Controllers don't work with all the games.  Considering the games are arcade-quality, a nice arcade style joystick would be nice.

According to the AVGN, you can use a Genesis or Atari 2600 controller.

There are two popular third-party controllers that use joysticks in place of the original's... weird... thing.
The Amiga Power Stick and the Wico Command Control.
Never tried any of them myself, though.

Just about any controller that works with an Atari 2600 will work on a Colecovision, provided that the CV game doesn't require a 2nd button function or something needing the keypad.  I don't recall there ever being a dedicated 3rd-party controller for the CV.  I do remember buying the little joystick 'stick-ons' for the standard controller (stuck on top of the CV 'knob', much like the joystick stickie for the Intellivision).

Umm... EVERY Colecovision needs the keypad to select your game variation.  There's no way around that.

Have you actually tried this or are you just assuming it will work?

We get a lot of that around here!

Don't know if it's the case with all games, but you can generally use the keypad on the second controller to select the game variation. If you're playing alone, you shouldn't need a keypad on the controller you use to play the game.

Use the CV controller to select a variation, and then plug in a Genesis controller.
