2600 must-haves

Postby a1 » April 26th, 2010, 1:37 am

I posted earlier that I just acquired a 7800, and I've gotten some great suggestions for 7800 games, but I'm really most interested in 2600 games. What games do you guys recommend? (I only have super breakout and combat right now).

I'm a big fan of River Raid and since you only have an Atari it will do...*sigh*

Chopper Command would have to be my second favorite game for the system. Great graphics and cool sounds plus it gets hard quick.

An obvious one would be Pitfall but I personally get sick of it fast even as a child I got sick of it after about 15 screens.

Empire Strikes Back it's a fun fly and shoot game with the best soundtrack on Atari (at least I think so)

Just a few check them out.

*computer voice* HAVE YOU PLAYED ATARI TODAY?

Not counting homebrews, here are a few original 2600 games that shine:

Pitfall II:Lost Caverns
H.E.R.O.
Montezuma's Revenge (Well worth the extra $$ it commands on E-Bay)
Frostbite
Kaboom!

This next batch of games are well-done arcade translations worth owning:

Dig Dug
Missile Command
Centipede/Millipede
Frogger
Pole Position

Finally, a few of the earliest Atari titles that are simple yet still fun to play today:

Bowling
Basketball
Dodge 'Em

Here's a few that haven't been mentioned yet:

Midnight Magic
Turmoil
Winter Games
Demon Attack
Phoenix
Jr. Pac-Man
Enduro
Ice Hockey (especially if you have someone to play against)
Space Invaders (remember, as an Atari owner, you are required by law to have this game)
Circus Atari

Oops! I forgot Freeway which was a much simpler but better looking and more difficult Frogger clone with chickens.
