So it seems many critics (but not the VGC) think that the original Donkey Kong Country was very overrated at its initial release. Electronic Gaming Monthly, Gamespy and even Miamoto himself have called it one of the most overrated games of all time. What are your thoughts?
To be frank, I have never quite understood the criticism; DKC was the first SNES game I ever played and it's still just as much fun today as it was back then. I honestly think it's a triumph, and one of the greatest 2-D platformers of all time. All of my friends (including my wife) would agree as well.

I think the snes was full of bland platformers, and the DKC series was the most popular of them all.
It was all about graphics.
The level design is very generic and run of the mill, and the platforms are 'fuzzy' - they lack distinct edges in many levels, leading to cheap deaths.
The collision detection on the 3-d sprites or whatever is the same - spotty.
The camera is zoomed in too far. Can't see where you are going.
I say they are all 'C' grade.

I for one don't think the game is over-rated. It combined excellent graphics with simple gameplay, creative foes, and enough hidden treasure to keep me going back to search for anything I missed the first time through. Miyamoto retracted his criticism claiming that when he made it, he was resisting pressure from his superiors to make Yoshi's Island look like DKC.

Donkey Kong Country is an overrated game. It played so slow and cumbersome compared to Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog. To be fair, the graphics were so realistic and impressive when most other games were cartoon-like.

DKC was a good game with mindblowing graphics for its day. DKC was the final blow in the 16 bit wars... sega dropped the genesis to focus on the saturn, and Nintendo made a lot of SNES owners very happy with DKC.
Miamoto had no part in making DKC, so his comments stem from a hint of bitterness.
today i would give DKC a solid B. I enjoyed the game, but i still prefer super mario world and sonic the hedgehog.

It is overrated, and it's miles behind Vectorman or Rayman in terms of fun or speed.
Graphically it is amazing but all 3 are controller throwing hard in the same way most Castlevania titles, Battletoads, Sonic 2 for Game Gear,Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels are
Also controlling Dixie Kong is a real mess at times and I think I was a victim to too many cheap deaths.
I will give it points for the ever so attractive sounding Stickerbrush Symphony.

I think the 3 games on the SNES are highly overrated. I remember getting a Nintendo VHS tape advertising the games showing the footage. I though this looks horrid but the game mechanics looked fun. I was given it for my birthday and played it and it's been sitting on my shelf since. I inherited the other 2 and think they are worse than the first. It all comes down to what you like in this type of game.

I think DKC is horrible, mostly due to the use of screen real estate and how sometimes it's hard to tell what's a ledge and what's not in some of the levels (I think steer pointed both of these things out). It was one of those later-era games that pretty much screamed "Hey, our games look as good as the Playstation's!" and well ... the 3d models did look pretty dandy for the SNES. Nintendo pushed the game pretty dang hard with VHS tapes and iron-on T-shirt DKC pictures and the like. Speaking of the VHS, I remember being more excited about the Killer Instinct teaser at the end of the movie. "WHAT IS THAT???"
But on the other hand, my wife loves it sooooooo ... different strokes for different folks, I guess!

@ Pixel
Pogs, too?? I guess that makes since ... EVERY commercial franchise seemed to have their own special pogs/slammers (aka rounded cardboard/dangerous weaponry) around that time. I remember my parents took us to Holiday Inn and they gave us "save the panda" pogs.
What do kids collect nowadays? Friends on Facebook?
