It looks like a new edition in the long-running Tokyo Xtreme Racer series by Genki has finally been released, many years since the last title which I believe was Tokyo Xtreme Racer 4 (known as Import Tuner Challenge in the US) for the XBox 360.
Check it out!
At least for now, the game is in Early Access and is a PC exclusive, I imagine console ports might materialize later down the line after the game is finalized, but so far reviews are very positive: there is a lot of content already, and there have been some improvements done since TXR3 at least. Is anyone considering picking this one up? I am surprised to see the franchise's return after so long, but I guess its dedicated fanbase has been asking for just this for a long time, and Genki decided to deliver. Proof that you can still have a viable franchise that's not high-budget like the GTA games so long as you have a dedicated community willing to follow your lead.
I must say, graphically this game looks very impressive, and apparently it is very well optimized too. This is probably some of the best "night driving" graphics I've ever seen in a game.

Wow I'd be very interested in this. One thing I loved about the original Tokyo Xtreme Racing games was the immersion. It felt like you were cruising in a sports car around a modern city late at night. I loved the lighting effects, and the minimal traffic made it feel like you owned the road. You could really zone out playing a game like this.

It looks like the Early Access period is going to last for about four months, as the game is already mostly complete. Regardless, I think it'll probably take quite a while to reach consoles, assuming it ever does. Even for Japanese developers, PC/Steam are nowadays the lead platform to release and develop games for, apparently, coinciding with the massive rise in popularity of PC games in recent years.
