That's right folks. Nintendo has cut their sales projection of the Wii U by 70% worse yet they also cut sales projection of the 3DS (from 18 mil to 13 mil) for 2014.

Nintendo is is pretty big trouble. I'm not sure what this means for the Wii U. I hope they fix it rather than dump it considering I just bought one for Christmas. Disappointing 3DS sales will give them less wiggle room with the Wii U.

Actually, I think this gives them more wiggle room.

They may experiment with game prices and game delivery with Wii U, and/or 3DS.

They have held down the fort as long as possible on game prices, now they have to try something else. Long term, the compnay is very stable, they are getting their new facilities online, and the dev teams are stable, productive and pumping out great work. I would not worry about it at all.

Yeah Nintendo are happy in third place and will be happy in fourth place when the Steam machines start arriving.

My thoughts are reflected pretty well by this IGN article. (Note: For your own sanity, read Keza's great article, then don't read the comments. The comments are full of both sets of fanboys and it makes painful reading).

Maybe they can get the Wii U approved as a Steam machine?

Heh,

I wonder if we'll see the Wii U make an early exit in two years and then...drumroll...Nintendo comes out with a super advanced console that smokes both Sony and Microsoft.

Think about it.  Sega left early because they were hemorrhaging money and went multiplatform.  Nintendo is not in the same position.  They could essentially produce their own Steam PC like system that in two years will be leaps and bounds faster/better/etc compared to both the PS4 and MS.

Two years into the new/current generation will mean there is still a lot of consumers who haven't upgraded yet.

For the right price they could compete with the PS4/Xbox One.  Really, what's needed is for Nintendo to pony up for an exclusive GTA only on the new Nintendo machine, code named Killer Squirrel.

If they focus on the games and not on the "let's expand our base to everyone" they'll do well.

I don't think they will try to directly compete again anytime soon. They fought a good fight with the GameCube which in many ways was just such an attempt and ended up losing for the 2nd generation in a row to a newcomer in the console world.

Nintendo's next platform will be a hybrid console and handheld that allows for a merging of their game development to deliver content to a single platform. Mark my words, that's how they're going to pull themselves out of this mess in the console world and how they're going to strengthen their handheld business at the same time.

Heck, they're just about able to keep a semi semi steady stream of top notch content to two different product lines by themselves alone. If it's suddenly all aimed at a single platform that does both tasks, any 3rd party development really will just be icing on the cake since there will be more than enough quality 1st party offerings to keep people happily busy.

And hit a home run and those 3rd parties just might naturally return in time.

The failure of the Wii U makes me pretty much lose faith in the game industry.  I don't care for where it is heading and I don't plan to be a part of it for much longer.  In my eyes the PS4 and Xbox One represent pretty much everything I dislike about modern gaming.  I don't care about online multi-player, I don't want games that resemble movies, I don't care about hyper realistic graphics and I don't care about media integration.  I like videogame consoles because they play video games.  Games.  It's simple and it's all I ask for.  I don't want realistic military shooters or online only mech shooters.  I'm sick of what the industry is constantly touting as the next 'AAA' game.  I can't tell you the last time that I heard about a game and was genuinely floored and excited for it to come out.

Problem is...I KNOW i'm in the minority.  I probably represent less than 10% of all gamers out there.  The industry doesn't cater to my tastes and probably never will.  For me the golden age of gaming is long gone.  Nintendo still focuses on making great, fun games as a priority, but unless there is a 3DS like turn around in sales I'm not sure the Wii U is going to be around for another 3-5 years.  That being said, I'd still gladly buy one and support Nintendo.  Heck if it has a gamecube like run I'd be happy with that...that system had a TON of fun games despite the lack of success.

I don't know what Nintendo can do to increase sales at this point.  They're already pumping out top quality software.  They always do.  I suppose a price cut might help.  I dunno.  They're not going to lose money or go out of business anytime soon...so I'm not worried about that.  These next 12-24 months will be interesting for the big N.  I'll be watching for sure.

Nintendo only have themselves to blame for the system's failure, if you ask me it's silly to "lose faith" in the industry just cause Nintendo were counting their chickens before they hatched. They let the success of the Wii get to their heads and assumed that people would buy the system regardless of anything else.

The Wii U would not have failed had they put more effort into getting better third-party support(something that's been a problem for Nintendo for many years now) and consequently a better selection of games, or had they marketed the system better.  To this day people are still confused as to whether the Wii U is a new system or just an upgrade, and that's definitely hurt sales.

For me the golden age of gaming has barely begun, Xbox represents everything I love, I dig cinematic hyper-realistic games and military shooters, though that's not to say I don't like Nintendo's brand of gaming as well. I'm happy to own a 3DS, but so far i've seen no compelling reason to buy a Wii U, it just dosen't have that many games that look interesting to me.
