I've been really excited for Fortnite for a long time, and they just recently released a physical version of it on PS4... along with the promise that it will go 100% free to play sometime next year. As much as I want this game, I don't want it bad enough that I can't wait till I can get it for free. And yet, people are still buying it for it for $60! Am I missing something? Apart from getting to play it early, is there any real benefit to paying for a game that's going to be free in a couple months?
After doing some research, it looks like the paid version has extra content that getting it for free later on doesn't offer. If I were to offer a cynical perspective, I'd say that the developers are using the game's current price to exploit the impatience of their potential customers, which wouldn't be surprising considering freemium games aren't exactly known for respecting their audience.
