External HDD PS4 / PS3 Question

I’ve ordered myself a 2Tb external HDD for my PS4 and hopefully PS3.
Can I use it for both at the same time or do they require different formatting ?

Are you intending to use the external HDD for media or for games?
If for media, the drive should be interchangeable with PS3 and PS4.

Sorry should have specified. Yes primarily for storing PS+ games for both systems (if possible).

I don't believe that's possible on the PS3. I think it will be limited to media, game saves, and the like.

Agreed. The formatting of external drives for games is specific to the PS4. PS3s cannot run games from external media.
