Tough call from the screen shot. Thoughts?

It doesn't look particularly imaginative, but indie games have been using that moody, bloomy, parallax-laden art style for ages. Aquaria looks like that and came out in 2007. Capsized had an edgy, sci-fi take on that look in 2011. Knytt Underground did it with silhouettes in 2012. Being a console gamer, you may not have heard of these games, but they were all high-profile indie releases, and they're just the first examples that come to mind from a sea of similar-looking indie projects. Gleamlight only looks like Hollow Knight because Hollow Knight really wasn't that distinctive in the first place.

What I don't like about Gleamlight's look is that it makes a big fuss over its stained-glass motif but never actually illuminates the stained glass. Why even bother then?

As the man above suggested, these sorts of Indie titles have been knocking around the scene for well over a decade with Hollow Knight reusing the stylistic tropes from it's predecessors. Hollow Knight is not unique, it is just one of the few that squeezed through the peer review process and shuffled towards the front line. A bit like Skullmonkeys being widely revered as an original concept and game despite Neverhood being a minor underground hit on the PC scene in the mid 90's.
