Xbox Series X Games Reveal

Okay, on the plus side Halo Infinite is real.

On the downside they are clearly struggling with things. There was pop-in during the gameplay clip which for a console as powerful as the Series X is you'd think this sort of optimization would have been figured out by now.

This game is going to be rushed and launch with a half-baked game similar to what they did with Halo: Guardians. Only the single player shipped on disk and multiplayer was a download with a majority of the features being released later. Of course, this is only my opinion based on some super sketchy animation of the Spirit Covenant troop carrier animation looking like a jerky claymation attempt in the background. They also did not demo any sort of multiplayer, split screen, or co-op action.

For the Xbox Series X to be the most powerful console launching this fall, the Microsoft games being published for it looked like something you'd see on the 360 or Switch. They didn't do themselves any favors in winning the graphic wars with Sony on this demo real. Any of the games that actually looked good will also be available on the PS4 down the road.

I'm too old for the dark, dreary, the world is going to end games. Unfortunately, that seemed to be a majority of what's coming out this fall.

There were a few glimmering hopes that were shown. My favorite hands down was Pyschonauts 2 with Jack Black. Black singing a song and a video of him talking to the songwriter was epic. That made the show for me. The Gunk by Steamworld developers had possibilities. Phantasy Star Online 20th Anniversary Edition was bright and colorful. Crossfire X looked like a next gen game although it could have been called Call of Duty and play fine on a PS4 or Xbox One. The final game announced was Fable. As it was merely an announcement video it's too early to say one way or the other on that one.

What are you guys' thoughts on this?

I'm always up for a new Halo, but this one sounds so half-baked you wonder what the hell Microsoft has been working on over the last few years.

In concept I like the idea of shipping the single-player mode on disc, since that's all I care about. But it seems to me last time they couldn't even get that part right.

Also, I assume local split-screen is a thing of the past. Which is sad because my friends and I always enjoyed that in the early-2000's.

Well, that's me conjecturing that that's what they will do based on what happened with Halo: Guardians. In theory local split-screen is still in but they didn't show it.

I don't trust anything 343 says regarding Halo due to their past behavior on Guardians. They kept saying Guardians would support split screen until right before the 4th of July holiday weekend. Being a slow weekend they knew not a lot of folks would catch or pay attention to that fact. It's a page out of something our politicians do.

I was just looking at a list of upcoming Xbox games, and outside of Halo it is positively yawn-inducing.

Honestly, hardware reveals—especially modern reveals—do nothing for me. Come back to me in another year. I get so frustrated by the teaser trailers, or the trailers that show no gameplay and only a voiceover with a landscape (Fable). These are games that we PLAY! Wait until you can put together some gameplay footage to reveal the game! This practice has gotten completely out of hand!

I found this amusing, not for the video, but for the comments. Microsoft can't do anything right any more.

The only games that interest me from their event are Fable an Avowed, and they didn't show enough to get me excited yet. Since they will both be released on PC as well, I have no incentive to buy the new XBOX.

This is definitely a case where people should consider waiting a year after launch before investing in the new consoles. The consoles will go on sale the following holiday, launch games will be cheap, and hopefully new games that take advantage of the hardware will be released.

Well gents lets stop thinking that this is going to be a new console generation. It is in name only. Same/similar graphics except 4K with higher frame rates. Raytracing an added feature but 90% of stuff will be good old rasterization with higher pixel counts. Same gen, new coat of paint.

Games wise looks like nobody really bothered and opted to play safe. A bunch of potential 7/10's is hardly riveting stuff. Hellblade 2 might be interesting, small studio, the first game was pretty cool. Also coming out on PC though....

What really irritates me about the Xbox X reveal has nothing to do at all with Microsoft themselves.

I’m irritated with Nintendo.

When the pandemic started, I totally understood that that the gaming world would be impacted by it, and Nintendo came out and said as much.

However, as time has gone on, it seems sort of suspect because Sony had their PS5 reveal, Microsoft unveiled the Series X, Ubisoft had their showcase, with another one planned for the near future. It seems that nearly every worthwhile developer, big and small, has worked their way around the E3 cancellation.

Except, of course, Nintendo.

With the pending release of two new consoles this Fall, it seems weird to me that Nintendo has nothing announced for the Fall, and even if they announce anything in the next few weeks, that leaves three months to hype what would be their big holiday release. If they’ve had months to work from home, it’s surprising that they wouldn’t have anything to show for it.

At the very least, they could focus some of their effort on NSO. It seems like now would be the ideal time to reveal N64 games, if that was in the cards.
