According to this Washington Post article it appears that Microsoft is teaming up with Nintendo in order to overthrow the reigning market leader, Sony.

Check out this interesting snippet:
"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" Peter Moore, a Microsoft vice president, said in an interview. "People are going to buy two (machines.) They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."

I don't know if I would call it "teaming up" more like a cease fire.

That's what I'd be saying if I was him.  I'd be practically calling Wii games XBox games.  Think about it.  If you want the normal meat and ptatoes games we've gotten used to, the Wii won't be your fix, so they won't be in competition with each other.  However, if someone with $600 buys a Wii for that type of game, they've just taken away their ability to buy a PS3 but can still afford a 360 (I know that's simplistic, but the points the same).  I am definitely going to be one of the people buying a three six wii, and I think it'll be a popular choice.

The more I think about the price of the PS3, fully loaded, the more I think Sony has doomed itself unless it comes out with exclusives at or shortly after launch that make the system a "must have," for both some hardcore and casual gamers. I guess this is where the term "killer app" comes into play.

I think Microsoft's take on the situation may prove to be rather accurate.

Did anyone read the other articles that were linked from the first one?  This one's good for a laugh:

Put it to you like this:  I've been debating on whether to get a DS or PSP for about 6 months.  For a long time it was neither--neither had any games that I thought made it worth buying.  However, in the last 3 months, BOTH systems have really beefed it up in quality games.

Anyway, I can promise you I'll almost end up going with the DS due to its much lower price--if I thought the PSP was superior, I'd spend the extra cash, but I think both are equally awesome in very different ways.

But, I started thinking....I've gone with Nintendo EVERY system (over sega, sony, microsoft--even though I love halo).  And I figured out the reason...I love their franchises.  If you took away Marios, Zeldas, and Metroids, I'd never care about Nintendo again.  That's probably why the New Super Mario Bros. is the final straw in me holding out on a DS.

Voorhiessa, if you do end up getting a DS, I highly encourage you to wait a bit longer for the DS Lite to come out.  It absolutely slaughters the original design in just about every aspect.
