Jeanne D'arc (PS5)

Well, this certainly is...unique. A Final Fantasy Tactics -esque strategy game that reimagines the story of Joan of Arc as a magical girl anime? Gotta give them points for creativity, if nothing else.

This was one of the games that showed up on pretty much every list of must-buy PSP games, but since I was a spazzy teenager who ran on a toxic mixture of puberty and ADHD, I wasn't interested in slow paced games like that back then, so it's nice that they rereleased it on PS5. This is a straight port, though, so the graphics weren't updated at all, and boy do they look rough! Even the anime character portraits during conversations are blurry.

There's not much to talk about when it comes to gameplay. This is probably the most basic TRPG I've ever played. It works, and I'm having fun playing it, but I don't think it does a single thing new or different. The one highlight is Jeanne's magic armor form, which gives you the "godspeed" ability. Basically, if your attack kills the enemy, you get to take another turn. This will continue until you hit something that doesn't immediately die, which means if you whittle down the enemy's health a little and corral them into one spot before using it, you can pretty much beat the entire level in one go.

Honestly, the most fun I'm having is seeing how thoroughly they've anime'd the Joan of Arc story. Jeanne has a Sailor Moon-style transformation when she puts on her armor. The Duke of Bedford couldn't look more cartoonishly evil if you gave him horns and a pitchfork. Jeanne and her friends will encounter a legion of orcs and skeletons and be like "Oh no, it's the English army!" This entire story is artisanal grade cheese, and I'm loving every second of it.

If Genndy Tartakovsky had somehow been in charge of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frollo would have looked like that.
