Night Driver 2600

Postby matmico399 » October 31st, 2016, 6:59 pm

A retro game store near me had this came for 2.99 in a plastic case with cover art. I know anyone before about age 40 doesn't care what I write about this. But I think about the last time I played this was when I was about 13 when my friend Jason brought it over so many times. The cover art is truly one of the most beautiful for a 2600 game. I thought I would have nostalgic thoughts about this then yank it out after 5-10 minutes. This game is actually a sensational test of reflexes and is actually really fun. Esp after you have had a couple beers and your timing is a little off. I agree with Dave's grade of B. Now I need to go hand out candy. Happy Halloween!

I want to visit your retro store. Night Driver in the arcade is a special game for me as my Dad would handle the foot pedal with mischief and glee. The 2600 game is fun. Oddly, I don't think it uses the driving controller. Also oddly, this would have been a good 7800 game, which could have added the car...but by that time Pole Position was the boss.

I collect dedicated handhelds (tiger, mattel, whatever) and Night Driver would make a great handheld. You could do the arcade overlay on one too. I don't know if anyone made one though.

I think Night Driver was unusual because the home version (Atari 2600) was actually much better than the arcade. The arcade was in black and white, and didn't have eye candy like trees, houses, and oncoming cars. It was my first paddle game.

I remember my dad playing this game and he was laughing his ass off whenever he hit a guard rail.

Critic I have most of my nostalgia moments with the 2600 and Genesis. I luv those personal memories, they are fun to reminisce about.

Scotland I am lucky in that I have two retro stores close by. One ten minutes away and the other about a half hour. I picked up Night Driver, Sky Diver for the 2600. Plus monopoly on the Genesis. I had $4 in loyalty points so I got all three for exactly 8.50. Sweet. The farther one has more games and is cheaper. The closer one has more rare games. Next time you are in metro Atlanta if at all possible we'll try to hit them together. Your game knowledge astonishes me and I think we'd hit it off.

Thats nice of you to say. For knowledge, I tip my hat to many others here. The Critic, of course, Terry Marriot Guy, Spiceware and more. Whats great is that are some real specialists here. There are RPG gurus, schmup stars, etc.

The funny thing is actually have routed trips to hit retro gaming stores. Oh look dear, is that a video game store? Who knew?

I would guess a number of us have done something like that. A couple of people here have given me ideas of future vacation plans.

What a fun game this is! If Mariokart came out in 1980...

Thing of it is I like to listen to house music while I play Mariokart, but for this I decided to get with the times and put a disco mix on. I figure that's the closest precursor to house music.

Or was disco dead by 1980? The White Sox had Disco Demolition Night on July 12th, 1979, but that's a whole nother story.

In any case, the mix was not bad.

If I had to choose some background music for Night Driver, I think it would have to be Heading Out To The Highway by Judas Priest! Crank it up!

This might be a good idea for a thread...

The perfect night driving song in any case is The Cars' "Moving in Stereo", and it's period-appropriate too.

Yeah that's probably more appropriate, since both the game and song have a mesmerizing quality.

I always think of Blondie tunes when I remember 2600 Night Driver!
