Raging Justice (Switch)

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 18th, 2019, 10:39 pm

This game is a TRIP! It basks in every Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, side-scrolling beat em up trope to emerge from the 80's. You fight stereotypical punk rockers and trashy ladies. The moves are pretty elaborate and there are weapons galore.

At first the semi-digital appearance turned me off, but I got used to the style and really enjoyed the game. I really need to run it by the wife who is a longtime Streets of Rage fan.

I wish there were more games like this...

Critic, if you want a game similar to it, please check out 99VIDAS - DEFINITIVE EDITION which got physical via Strictly Limited Games, only problem is it sold out and you have to pay by scalepers on ebay more expensive or email for a wait list later on critic.

Looks like fun - I'll have to check it out one day. The graphics remind me a bit of Pit FIghter - they look a bit primitive but they bring back a lot of nostalgic vibes because of that (which I'm sure they were going for).

There's a game called The Takeover that's already available in on Steam in Early Access that will be coming to the Switch and PS4 supposedly sometime this year (a release date is not currently available):

It's basically Streets of Rage 4 - except that it's a one-man project that was in development for years before the actual SoR4 was announced. Graphics are a bit rough (more "digital" than I'd like) but it looks fine considering the circumstances. There are also a few new wrinkles in the formula with firearms and some old-school arcade driving and flying sections. I have no idea if a physical release is planned at this time.

If you do use Steam or GOG.com, there's another old-school brawler that I played a few months ago called Fight'N Rage that's worth a look. The graphics are much more cartoonish (somewhere between the 16-bit TMNT/Battletoads games and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game in style), there can be up to three simultaneous players and there's a lot of additional content (new characters, costumes, etc.) that unlocks as you play the game. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any plans for a console port at this time (like The Takeover, it was made by a very small team).

The beat-em-up Fight'N Rage that I mentioned previously will be released for the Switch (Sept. 26th), XBox One (Sept. 27th) and PS4 (soon). The article (linked below) has a new trailer for the console version and an extensive rundown of the game's features. It's unclear if the game is getting a physical release or not - none of the articles say whether the game is download-only or even give a price, only providing a release date for the various systems:

Another beat-em-up that has recently been released is River City Girls by Wayforward (best known for the Shantae series and Double Dragon Neon). I haven't played this yet, but I put at least a hundred hours into River City Ransom as a kid and just about everyone I follow who has played this game seems to enjoy it a great deal. The dirt-simple fighting of the original (which doesn't hold up so well today) has been given a number of new flourishes from what I can see in the trailers and gameplay videos, and it has a pixel-art style not too far from the Scott Pilgrim game but with with more realistically-proportioned characters a la Double Dragon Neon. There's a teaser trailer and trailers for each of the game's protagonists (which give more in the way of fight footage). The only thing I'm iffy about is that there looks like a lot in the way of voice-acting and cutscenes, which can get in the way which something repetitive like a beat-em-up. Game is currently available as a downloadable title for the Switch, PS4 and Steam and as a physical release for the Switch and PS4 through Limited Run Games (preorder available until 09/27/19) and through Play Asia.

Looks like fun! I've never even heard of this one, so I'll keep an eye out for it when it goes on sale.

Speaking of running things by the wife, mine's all about playing River City Girls. She saw the intro video where one of the gals has a pet cat, then learned that collecting stray cats is one of the side quests in the main game, and now she is ALL IN!

I don't want to spend too much on it, but once it goes down to $10 or less in the eShop, we're all over it.

That Scott Pilgrim game was way, way better than it had any right to be. Haven't played it in about ten years (my then-girlfriend downloaded it for her PS3) but I remember having a blast. Very River City-esque. Got it for about $10, too (I think that was the standard listing price) and it was worth every penny.

I never tire of beat-'em-ups or shoot-'em-ups. Neither does my old lady. Whenever one comes along that has two player co-op we're all over it.

Which reminds me, we're right about overdue for a good, lengthy session of Ikaruga. Might be time to fire up the Dreamcast again!
