Rikki and Vikki (Atari 7800)

Postby VideoGameCritic » June 9th, 2020, 2:14 pm

I am loving this game. You don't see many new Atari 7800 titles, so I ponied up for the physical copy. It's first-rate, with glossy box and manual, and a orange translucent cartridge.

The game itself is remarkable. Fun cartoon-style graphics, great music, and thoughtfully-designed stages. It's kind of a platform puzzle hybrid. You can play single player or coop. It even saves high scores.

My only complaint has nothing to do with the game itself. The Atari 7800 "painline" joystick is the worst! I can't believe Atari shipped a system with these things.

Wow I'm intrigued. A little expensive though. Maybe I can work out a deal with him in exchange for a review of one of his products.

Yeah, the controllers are a bit pricey, but at least least they're made with high quality parts.

And there are some less expensive options like the Seagull 78 adapter, which allows you to use Genesis controllers on the 7800 (unfortunately it appears to be out of stock at the moment).

And if you want to create your own controller, there's the Easy 78 Input/Output board, which is what I ended up doing.

I always found it odd how the European 7800 came with a traditional joypad (looks like the SMS/NES pad) whereas in the US, we got the garbage controller.

Just need to make a correction The game does NOT record high scores, which is too bad considering all the effort put into the enter-your-initials screen.

Atari 7800 was my first console. Kinda sad how 30 years after being obsolete it's now getting some great games and my unit doesn't power on.

Another problem with no-save is that you have to play thru the early levels each time. A simple password system would have gone a long way. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't included considering how thoughtful the overall design is.
