Dr. Mario (N64)

This game can completely addict me, much like Tetris. I will play in bunches, where it won't touch my N64 for... years? And then when it does, I can't turn it off for the life of me. It gets to the point that I see combinations in my head when I'm driving or sitting in a boring meeting at work. That's when my wife has to basically have an intervention, and I put it away.

The music is just barely on the side of ear-worm rather than annoying, but it gets in there and I find myself humming it mindlessly. The challenge ramps up awfully slow, but thankfully you can choose to start at any level, at any speed, up to level 21. After that, if you lose, you have to restart at 21 and work up again. It's one of the rare games that is great both solo or against friends. If you want to play against the AI characters, they are all over the board skill-wise, so almost anyone can find the right challenge level.

It's been in my console for too long now, and my wife has been out of town, so I'm writing this post as my own intervention and I'm going to put it away. I'm sure it'll come out again sometime in 2022.

I’ve watched a few Dr Mario speedruns, and 64 seems to be the preferred version for some reason. That’s interesting to me.

From the time I first played Dr. Mario at my friend's house on his Game Boy in 1993 to now, I never could get the hang of Dr. Mario. I enjoy it, especially the N64 version, but I suck.
