I've given the Civilization games a few tries in the past, but the sheer number of rules means that the tutorial itself can take hours to complete, and I always got bored.
This time I decided to only let it teach me the basics and then learn the rest by myself. That turned out to be a good call, because once I really got into the game, I wasn't able to pull myself away. I've only played one game so far, but that took nearly eight hours. And even then, the game didn't "end," I just rage quit when Queen Victoria wiped out my army the moment I declared war on her.
And that's the part that might turn me off. Just like with Darkest Dungeon, it takes a long time to get anywhere good in Civilization. Being knocked back to square one after hours of work doesn't mean you can't recover, but considering how long it took you to get there, and how easily you get stomped, you might not have the willpower to do it all over again.
