Yeah they were able to salvage most of it, but I think at least a quarter of it is considered lost.

There is actually surprising little dialog, as the actors convey so much through their actions and facial expressions.

That’s true of most silent films; they’re pantomime, with brief bits of text for clarity.

Saw it a few years ago, on VHS. Not bad, even in truncated form. I’d like to see a more complete version some time.

If i understand things correctly, they built the bottom floor of certain buildings, then used a mirror with part of the backing scraped off to reflect the sets towards the camera. The models were placed behind the mirror, so the camera could see them through the holes in the backing.

I just did my Octoberly rewatch of Over the Garden Wall. It's a fun little dark fairy tale with a neat twist in the last couple of episodes. It's a series, but it's so short you can (and I do) watch the whole thing straight through in a couple of hours like a movie. It's on Hulu, so if you're at all interested you should give it a try!

Megalopolis, the new Francis Ford Coppola movie. The promo for the movie, makes you think it is an end of the world drama and then a city is re-built. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is basically a play about American politics. It is very esoteric, with the characters quoting Shakespeare from the first line of dialogue. This is a movie that will not be to everyone's taste, but it is a shame, as it is a movie that it is every bit as good as some of the Oscar nominated tales of old.
Three Camps
The Architect. He wants to rebuild the city to be a new shining beacon to its citizens about how good life can be. Adam Driver stars in it.
The Mayor. He is a bruiser of old and is used to the dirty side of politics. His way to get what he needs.
The pretender to the Throne.
In the garden of Eden, he would be the snake. Evil, and causing descent.

Supporting cast.
Evil blonde reporter. Scheming like a spider.
The patricidal father. The person who keeps the story anchored.
The daughter of the Mayor. Gorgeous.

So it is basically a play about opposing factions trying to get their vision of the city to be the one that is popular and goes forward. There is a lot of underhand politics that go on. Though I think it is meant to be a parable about 21st Century USA.

It is a hard watch and I loved it. It has a very slow start but gets better. A Plus for me.

Thanks for the reminder to watch Megalopolis. I was intrigued by it but forgot about it during a rough patch in my life.

Watched Red Rock West a few days ago with a friend. I'd been meaning to catch up on Nicolas Cage's good movies for a long time, and this was a decent place to start. Much sillier than I expected it to be, though, especially toward the end. 7/10, 8 on a good day.

The setting reminded me of Thelma & Louise, which I watched last night with the same friend and another, neither of whom had seen it. I've long considered it tied with Blade Runner as my favorite movie, but I'm ready to commit now. It's my favorite, no tie.

I just watched the second episode of Uzumaki, and oof. the breakneck pacing is still there, cramming even more stories into a single episode, but the animation is noticeably worse too. And now, not only are the stories not given enough time to set up and develop, they can't even deliver a proper payoff because most of them had the endings cut out entirely. This show is a spiral, all right. A downward spiral. (Snobby posh laugh)

The Field of Dreams

Odd movie, almost like a dream itself. I find it hard to describe; it says a few interrelated things. First, perhaps, is to follow dreams, & that things do work out. But it also says you shouldn’t do so to such an extent it harms others; that you have some greater purpose & duty to perform.

It also says Shoeless Joe shouldn’t have been banned for life, & that baseball brings Americans together.

I wonder if anyone’s seen the new Joker movie. I was planning to go but am having 2nd thoughts. I’m not dismayed by the awful reviews. Mainly it’s Lady Gaga having such a big part. I think her voice is a little overrated. And just in general her getting a huge amount of screen time doesn’t sound good.

So I saw Viva Las Vegas, the 1964 Elvis Presley movie with Ann Margret. And it’s just fantastic. Elvis was a fantastic actor with an incredible presence, 10 times more than anyone I’ve ever seen. I had no idea that he was such a great actor. The songs are wonderful. And the plot is great with an exciting car race at the end, very well done for the time it was made.

Watched Dr. Giggles earlier today. I first seen this movie close to something like 30 odd years ago, and I have to say I like it even more now than I did then. Larry Drake, who also played the main villain in Darkman (another killer flick. May have to watch that one soon as well), does an absolutely masterful job at playing the evil doctor. He has so many funny one liners in the movie, and he delivers them all perfectly. My favorite, of course, is the one he delivers to the kid in the living room playing Dr. Mario just after he killed his brother and his girlfriend. He takes one look at the TV screen, says "terminal" as deadpan as one possibly could, then walks out of the house. I don't think the young fella even noticed him, as he was so engrossed in the game lol. Like ya would be, though. After all, it is Dr. Mario, one of the most addictive puzzle games for the NES. Anyway, that was the highlight for me in a movie just full of crazy scenes. If you haven't seen this one, by all means check it out. It's up on Tubi right now if interested....
