One thing that got me excited about reading as a child was the Scholastic Book Club they had at my elementary school. Anyone remember that?
About once every month or so we would get this color brochure showing all of these kids books the school could send away for. My mom always let me order two or three. Some were even book and record sets!
Anyway they always took a long time to arrive, but eventually some delivery guy would show up at our classroom with a brown box. We all knew those we the books and we were pretty excited. The teacher, sensing our excitement, would wait until the very end of the day to open the damn box.
I still have a lot of those books! I wonder if they still do anything like that...?

I think I got issues of Dynamite! through school and scholastic. 5th grade. And later, Bananas mag. Dynamite! magazine would have cool 3D posters and glasses sometimes.

I remember this as clear as day. And I still have some of those books I ordered to this day. It was a great time to be a kid, but sadly, I don't think that they do this in schools anymore. And if that is indeed the case, that's a real shame.

Dynamite! magazine......I haven't thought about that in decades! I still have the Encyclopedia Brown mystery books and The Empire Strikes Back movie book that I ordered.
I think Troll book club was another one of these companies that did this. That was an exciting day when the shipments finally came in!
I remember reading somewhere a while back that a lot of schools stopped offering this. One of the reasons cited was that kids from low income families were feeling left out as they could not participate in ordering, thus school districts became sensitive to this.
Or maybe as with just about everything else.....Amazon knocked them out of business.

I'm happy to report that scholastic is still a thing! (at least up here in Canada). My kids are now grade 10 and 7, but when they were in elementary school they got a scholastic catalogue every month, and we still ordered via the catalogue (not on line, as far as I remember)

Yeah! I loved the old Scholastic Book Club. I ordered a slew of books through that thing. Good times!

Oh my goodness I had forgotten about Dynamite magazine! I used to read those from cover to cover! I'm tempted to pick up an old issue on ebay.
