"Tales from the Crypt" (1972) Before the HBO series there was the comic series way back in the 1950's and in between, there was this movie developed by Amicus who knew how to do horror back then. Directed by Freddie Francis there's a lot of style and polish in this version as 5 people break away from a tour group of some catacombs and encounter a mysterious hooded figure (played by Ralph Richardson) who tells them how they are going to die, or so it seems....A woman (Joanne Collins) murders her husband on Christmas Eve to try to collect his insurance, but hears of a homicidal maniac dressed up as Santa and tries to hide from him and conceal her own crime. However adding to her problems is her daughter who's too eager to meet "Santa". A man abandons his family to be with his secretary but on the way to her place they get involved in a car crash and then the man tries to get back home only for everyone to be frightened of him. A retired garbageman (Peter Cushing) is loved by children for his toys, puppets and dogs, but is resented by a snobbish father and son, more the latter than the former. Using various dirty tactics to bump him off, they are relieved of his presence, unaware he was practicing mystical arts (including Ouija board) and after a year returns to exact a gruesome revenge. A ruthless, though ineffective businessman is on the brink of financial ruin, until his wife discovers a chinese figurine that has the power to grant wishes, they feel that their troubles are over, but each wish comes with a price, beware the third.....An army major (Patrick Magee) becomes the new superintendent of a home for the blind, but only uses the position to live in luxury while the blind suffer. After ignoring complaints and the death of one due to the cold, the blind exact a very nasty revenge on him.
Well worth the view and even better here's the link:

Watched Terrifier on Prime, and boy, that was way too much. The clown was absolutely terrifying but watching this was torture! The violence was just way over the top. Too disturbing for my taste. I won't be watching the sequels, that's for sure.
I think I want to watch a classic Universal monster movie just to calm my nerves...

Not only would I not go camping after that; I didn't want to go down into my own basement!
You nailed it perfectly critic. Exactly.

Trilogy Of Terror. I saw parts of it before but never the whole thing. The opening episode with Karen Black was pretty good. But the puppet tribesman is what everyone will remember it for. That little thing was so creepy.

VideoGameCritic wrote:Rewatched House of the Dead (2003) the other night. When it was first released, this was kind of a joke. It was a low-budget video game movie directed by the infamous Uwe Boll. But after years of watching random low-grade horror movies on Prime and Netflix, this is starting to look like Citizen Kane.
The story doesn't make sense and the dialog is awful. The attempts at "humor" (guy throws up on girlfriend) are sophomoric at best.
BUT. This film has a lot of cool set pieces, like the rave, house, and that cool fishing boat. There's a lot of over-the-top fighting and shooting. The way they weave scenes from the game into the movie are awkward, but at least they tried. The babe factor is off-the-charts. That Asian chick dressed in red/white/blue is just amazing.
House of the dead 2, is way better, I have it on UMD. I really enjoyed it.

Zack Burner wrote:The Blair Witch Project (1999) - the famous mockumentary of 3 young filmmakers deciding to do a documentary of a Blair Witch in the woods out in some small town out in Maryland. After interviewing the locals, they decide to experience all the hysteria behind it head on out in the wilderness with no one else to aid them, and strictly holding camping gear and cameras. Things go terribly wrong out there, they see creepy effigies, something attacks their tent in the dead of the night, and then one goes missing and someone leaves behind a gruesome package, that ultimately leads to a (seemingly) deserted house only for the trio to end up dead. We never see the evil they are seeking (or is it the other way around?), yet its enough to chill the blood. It's not without its flaws though, the trio do some pretty irrational things like kicking the map down the creek or arguing amongst themselves. Other than that this is definitely worth the look.
Dreadful fan flick shot on VHS. I laughed all the way through it. Though I watched it on VHS.

Zack Burner wrote:Celebrating its 40th anniversary "Day of the Dead" (1985) the final installment in George Romero's Dead Trilogy, and its safe to say this is the weakest entry in the trilogy. While it has its moments, it lacks the razor sharp social commentary of "Night" and the artistry and fun of "Dawn". Spending the majority of the film inside of a bunker, it becomes more human vs human than human vs zombie. The characters here are not as sympathetic or interesting as the ones in the previous entries save for Sarah, Bill, and John, especially the last one, who comes with an interesting speech about the situation, though he's no Ben or Peter. The "protectors" which are the militarists turn out to be cold, self-aggrandizing scumbags who hubristically think they know what's "right". The angle of the intelligent zombie Bub at least is one of the saving factors especially at the end. Overall, not recommended unless you're a die-hard Dead fan.
Clueless summation Zack. I watched it in the movies and I loved it. I watched it on VHS 40 times and I loved it. I watched it uncut on DVD and I loved it.

Re: Recent Movies You Saw
Tron Ares.
I was on You Tube and two hater critics, Nerdtonic (republican) and Critical Drinker (miserable Jock) hated it, had decided that is was a woke nightmare. I did not watch their shows as I like to make up my own mind. Tron was the go to movie when I was a young adult. It spawned loads of great games. Which made more than the movie. ET was the big hit that it lost out too. ET had a couple of games, which quite good, are universally seen as the worst in history. About 10 years back, a new movie turned up. Not as good but interesting. Soundtrack by daft punk.
Yesterday, I walked into the movie hall, I got there very early. Huge cinema, which was empty. Was it a bad sign? I just stuck on Dragony and Manowar and got into the groove. Adverts came up, kept the music on. Zoned in rocking out.
Then the movie came out. Amazing graphics, and the music was by Nine Inch Nails? Wow. A movie you have to see at the movies. Big bold and wonderfully daft. Following on from the previous movie, the programs want to escape cyberspace and come into our world? Why? To feel the rain? Anyway, they can come out for 29 minutes but then de res. Then they find out that Flynn has written a code to make them permanent. Woo. No mention of Clue or Tron. The race is on to find the code. Dillingers grandson is a cad, and he controls Dillinger Corp. Some nameless Oriental gal has taken over from Flynn junior and wants to feed world hunger by creating digital orange trees to feed the world.
What follows is 2 hours of fun filled SF nonsense which will leave you with a big smile on your face. It is pure Tron.
A plus for me.

The Penguin Lessons (Steve Coogan, Jonathon Pryce, 2024).
A bit like an hour and a half of easy listening music, this is the kind of film you should watch with your mum. Lightly comic, an undemanding plot with Steve as an English teacher in a 1970s Argentina racked with political instability. And he accidently adopts a penguin.
If I went any further there would be plot spoilers. And that's more or less the whole film anyway. Charming and forgetful.

Re: Recent Movies You Saw
"Dracula" (1931) - One of my all-time favorites perfect for my Friday Night Fright. Many Dracula films come and go, but this is the one I keep coming back to. There are many factors that make it timeless: The atmosphere, the lighting, sense of dread, and of course Bela Lugosi himself as Dracula. Just everything about him makes him the ideal version of the vampire, from the face, the lighting on the eyes, the hands, his movements, his voice, and his immortal words "I bid you welcome...." "Listen to them....children of the night....what music they make...." and "I never drink.....wine". If there could be any faults with it, its that the story is condensed, though that is easily forgiven considering this is more based off a play than the novel (yes I have read the novel). Overall, if you're looking for a classic creeper, look no further than this!
