Best Game Soundtracks

Postby VideoGameCritic » September 13th, 2026, 12:19 pm

To get in the mood for Halloween, I've been listening to this haunting soundtrack CD I received with Silent Hill 4 (Xbox, 2004). It really is sensational, with strong vocal performances.

I should probably re-review Silent Hill 4, since my current review seems very generic. I did go back and add a blurb about the excellent soundtrack, which I remember is skillfully weaved through the cut-scenes.

Thoughts?

I've never played this specific game, but your update review has two typos: "meloncholy" should be "melancholy" and "simister" should be sinister". :) Cool looking album though!

But, if you're asking what our favorite video game soundtracks are... it's a tough one, but for me I would say:

Test Drive Unlimited 1, specifically the Playstation 2 version (other versions have MUCH worse music, but the PS2 version has arguably the best video game soundtrack of all time)
The first four Command & Conquer games
Ridge Racer Type 4
Doom and Doom II
Rise of Nations + Thrones and Patriots
Rayman Redemption and Rayman Origins
Interstate '76
The more jazz tracks from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (I find the orchestral music in it to be awful)
Daytona USA
The first three Donkey Kong Country games
Unreal and Unreal Tournament
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Streets of Rage Remake
Forza Horizon 2-3-4
A bunch of other games featuring Tim Follin or Frank Klepacki or Yuzo Koshiro.

There are many others, of course, but these instantly come to mind...

Thanks for the typo alerts. At least no one will ever accuse the VGC of using AI to write his reviews!! LOL

Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, and yes also the Room, have terrific soundtracks. I think Silent Hill 2 really excels though... coming across something like haunted surf music.

A great techno soundtrack was the Eternal Darkness soundtrack. It had some really spooky, jungley, Middle Eastern sounding tunes that were all done with a sort of techno-edge. I also think the Metroid games, especially Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and the first Prime game (well all of them, but especially the first) each had an amazing soundtrack.

The game soundtracks I listen to the most are Megaman and Final Fantasy(1 through 10) there it's hard to go wrong.
The best ones are Megaman 2, 3 and X. Final Fantasy VI and VII are probably the best there.

Some others:

Rule of Rose
Kenka Bancho 5
Resident Evil 2
Doom
Tetris on Philips CD-i
Journey to Silius
Yakuza series

I love the Super Castlevania IV soundtrack, classic games had better soundtrack than newers.

Cannot go wrong with a Castlevania soundtrack, or knock a Soulslike for boss themes, but...

Nier Automata and Nier (Replicant remake or original) probably are my favorite OST's of all time.

Streets of Rage 2 must be mentioned.

Narrowed down to a favorite track, for me, probably the battle theme in Skies of Arcadia. Moons give me strength!

Other than the music that plays in the "The last Metroid is in captivity..." opening in Super Metroid, the track that plays when you fight Kraid in Zero Mission is probably best in the series.

I have several Genesis and SNES RAW Soundtracks on my phone. I could listen to Blaster Master 2, the Road Rash trilogy, Streets of Rage, just about any Kirby Soundtrack...
