Anyone a fan of Deftones?

Personally, they're one of my favorite bands. All of their albums are different, and they've managed to survive trends and evolve their sound while staying true to their roots.

One of the most underrated modern bands.

Thoughts? Any fans?

I've liked the Deftones ever since I first heard "My Own Summer (Shove It)" about 18 years ago. I really like how they've brought influences from bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and Smashing Pumpkins into what began as such a straightforward, punishing type of nu-metal sound. I appreciate the way they've subtly integrated more keyboards and quiet spaces into their songs over the years without losing their heaviness. Chino Moreno isn't the best technical singer, but there's an emotional quality to his vocals where it sounds like he's absolutely bearing his soul every time he sings; I appreciate that he brings so much vulnerability and even femininity to such heavy music.

I really need to give Koi No Yokan another chance - I was keeping a very rigorous college schedule when it came out and I didn't really give it the time it needed to sink in. My favorite album overall is probably Saturday Night Wrist, although I'd put Diamond Eyes and White Pony at the same level. "Digital Bath", "Kimdracula" and their cover of Sade's "No Ordinary Love" are some of my favorite Deftone songs.

Strongly recommend you listen to Koi No Yokan. It's their 2nd best album after White Pony IMO. The song structures are varied, and even the really heavy riffs are smooth. Canyon sized choruses too. It's a perfect blend of ambience, atmosphere, hardcore, and heaviness. Favorite song is "Rosemary", because it combines influences from Cure, Tool, Helmet, Meshuggah, and Smashing Pumpkins.

From best to worst, I'd probably have

White Pony
Koi No Yokan
Diamond Eyes
Around the Fur
Deftones
Saturday Night Wrist
Adrenaline

Love all their albums though. Never have I heard a perfect blend of heavy and atmosphere before. Chino Moreno is incredibly underrated too. Every member is (rip Chi Cheng).

'Change' has to be their most requested song ever on the local radio where I live. It is still heard at least a maximum of 80+ times every other month. 'Hole in the Earth' is another favorite of mine, as well as 'You've Seen the Butcher'.

They're OK, but as far as Nu-Metal bands go, i'm more into stuff like Saliva, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit.

Unless you want to count Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More, the only other Nu-Metal (a term I don't like, but am using for the sake of convenience) band that I like as much as the Deftones is System of a Down. They had their missteps ("Lonely Day" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard) and their guitarist was much better at doing harmony vocals and short breaks than the lead vocals he did increasingly more of on the later albums, but they also had a lot to recommend: a goofy sense of humor, great harmony vocals, extremely tight musicianship, a lot of melody and some interesting stylistic detours (punk, folk, ska, new wave and middle-eastern influences).

I think Linkin Park has had some catchy songs, but I don't have any of their records. I think the guitarist from Limp Bizkit (Wes Borland) is a really creative and inventive player, but I find Fred Durst to be a pretty embarrassing frontman. I've only heard maybe three Saliva songs, so I don't really have much of an opinion.

Durst used to be a too over-the-top, though he's gotten better lately.

Just bought the new album (Gore), and I like what I've heard so far. Sounds more "crunchy" and has a space vibe on some songs. Personal favorite is Heart/Wires, which is amazing and sounds like Brena by A Perfect Circle.

I bought Gore the week it came out and ended up setting it aside for almost a month because the songs I listened to them perform on Jimmy Kimmel ("Hearts/Wires " and "Prayers/Triangles") didn't do much for me on their own. However, while the individual songs didn't jump out at me the way they did on Diamond Eyes, they do work very well as a continuous piece of music. I've only listened to the album once so I don't have much else to say yet, other than to listen to the album in one sitting in order to get the most out of it.
