The bass in his "drum and bass" (I think it could more accurately be considered jazz) is a highly processed bass guitar. Here's a little solo showcase from my favorite of his albums; it's the bass equivalent of Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption". (Here's a fully-fledged song from the same album that shows off his bass skills nearly as well.) He released an entire album of this stuff in 2009 that's pretty great in its own right, even if it's obviously not for everyone.
