This one I wanted to like it but it was made my the guy who did Loopers. An interesting movie that was too long. So for me history repeats itself. An interesting movie that is too long.
I had heard a rumour that Ja Ja was going to be in it. Plot spoiler ahead
No Ja Ja. What were they thinking. I was so gutted. I know he would have been old but all the same.
They have a super dread nought. I preferred the death star.
No enough is made of the robots. C3pio is criminally underused.
The best thing about the movie was the soundtrack which just booms out. I love John Williams.
What does everyone else think?

Do you really want another death star? It's been done 3 times already! That Dreadnaught was awesome, though shortlived.

I loved the movie. It took risks and expanded the mythology, instead of just rehashing previous movies. Here's how I'd rank it:
1) Return of the Jedi
2) Empire Strikes Back
3) A New Hope
4) Revenge of the Sith/The Last Jedi (tie)
6) Rogue One
7) The Force Awakens
8) Attack of the Clones
9) The Phantom Menace

I would hope that anyone entering the topic would account for the possibility of spoilers, and that only people who have seen the movie (or don't care to see it) would come in. Tough to have a real discussion on the movie without mentioning the plot. But yeah, if there's a way to edit the topic title, that'd be good.

As for my take on the movie.... I come at this movie from the perspective of not being a Star Wars "fan". Among gamers, I figure that I'm probably in a vast minority in that respect. I've seen each of the 8 main movies once or twice, and generally like them, but I'm not owning any merchandise here, and not emotionally attached to the movies or characters anymore than I'm attached to Hot Pockets. I don't ever care to go to a Star Wars premiere, but happened to get a free ticket for an advanced screening through work and decided to go.

Up til now, my favorite in the series was Empire Strikes Back, because, from the perspective of just a general movie-goer, I think it's genuinely the best movie. But for me, The Last Jedi just replaced it as my favorite. Yep, crazy, I know. Tons of great action scenes, including at least two scenes that belong in the Top 10 scenes of the entire series (i.e., the Rey-Kylo fight and the Luke-Kylo fight). I also loved that they took bold risks with the story, rather than playing it safe like they did with the Force Awakens (though I think playing it safe was the right call for that movie, since it was the first one under Disney control). I like what they did with Luke too - it was great fan service to have him in this movie, but Star Wars is about young heroes saving the universe, so they needed a way to transition away from Luke being a centerpiece. Even as a secondary character, he would overshadow everyone, and they seem to be setting up the next movie to avoid that from happening.

I know a true Star Wars fan would consider it blasphemes to pick a movie outside of the original trilogy as a favorite, and I can respect that, but I think the emotional connection plays a role in that and will prevent any future SW film from surpassing the originals for most people. But for this guy, Last Jedi was the most fun I've had watching a SW movie, and the best combination of drama and action.

From what I'm seeing, the same people who love the series seem to be the ones creating all the backlash. For the people that completely hated it, I feel like they want the franchise to stay within the confines of a narrow box (being just like the old movies; and playing it safe like the Force Awakens), rather than innovating the series to get bigger and better. I don't expect everyone to love it, but calling it trash and giving it tons of 1-star ratings is just sour grapes.

No! No! No! That is until my wife and I see the film then yes.

Regarding the Leia scene you are referring to, I just assumed Leia was force-sensitive. I was trying to avoid spoilers in case people haven't seen it yet. Maybe allow spoilers, but edit the page name to include a warning, if possible.

Yeah, I think it was one of many surprising moments that are initially shocking but make sense when you think about them. Leia is the daughter of Darth Vader just as Luke is his son. Why would she not also be able to access force powers in a pinch?

As for Luke at the end — the movie has established earlier what a toll that type of force ability could take. This scene was meant to mirror what happened to a certain character in ANH who consciously became one with the force.

Basically, nothing Rian did that was unexpected lacks basis in Star Wars mythology.

The flying princess was so awful. I mean who did she think she was Mary Poppins. Just ludicrous.

Super Dread nought was anything but super. I mean a packet of mint imperial lasted longer than it.

Hammil was having an off day when shooting. The word wooden was invented for him. Though for that part they were ripping off the original Star Wars and Hammy is no Sir Alec Guinness.

Kylo looked just like Joe Namath. I kept thinking he was gonna throw a football.

Good list. The Super dreadnaught could have destroyed a few things before it perished.

This was a more ambitious movie than The Force Awakens, but it was also much more inconsistent. I'd compare it to Return of the Jedi; they're movies that could have been great, brought down to merely good by some really lame elements. When it focuses on Luke, Rey, Kylo, and Snoke, it's excellent. When Finn and the infuriatingly precious Rose go to the casino planet and free all the animals, it's as corny as any of the prequels and maudlin in a way they couldn't hope to be. When Luke and Yoda blow up the tree, it's a powerful symbol of death and rebirth that means nothing when it turns out that Rey actually had the books on the Falcon the whole time. The endless ending follows the worst battle scene in the series (finished with some truly galling hypocrisy from Rose) with the brilliant meeting of "Luke" and Kylo. Dazzlingly stylized visuals are undermined by some of John Williams's hackiest scoring. This movie is a roller coaster of things to love and hate. But it's built around its best parts, and that anchors it despite the worst. A high 6 out of 10.

I didn't find that part of the film maudlin, and thought it managed to convey its point rather well; namely, the creation of wealth can be violent and built on the backs of exploitation of others. Perhaps, it didn't advance the plot, but personally, I don't think every scene needs to focus on plot.

The flying Jedi are so awful. I mean who do they think they are, using the force to jump three storeys high, perform backflips.

Think about what you're saying...

Remember she is untrained in the power of the Swartz. It was so bad... and I expected her to sing a spoonful of sugars makes the medicine go down in the most delightful of ways....

Watching it, it turned Spaceballs into a serious movie.
