Some of my favorites listed by sub genre, geographical location or movement:

The Big Four:
1) Metallica "Master of Puppets"
2) Megadeth "Rust in Peace"
3) Slayer "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss" (tie). Reign because of the all out aggression. And Seasons because of the different tempos and the more nuanced and technical soloing by both Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. Apparently, Kerry King took lessons from his old guitar teacher prior to the recording sessions for this album. And Hanneman was listening to a lot of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai during this time period.
4) Anthrax "Spreading the Disease.

Canadian Metal:
1) Annihilator "Alice in Hell"
2) Razor "Shotgun Justice"
3) Sheavy "The Electric Sleep"

American Metal:
1) Pantera "Far Beyond Driven"
2) Ministry "Psalm 69"
3) Machine Head "Burn my Eyes"
4) White Zombie "La Sexorcisto Devil Music Vol.1"

British Steel: (see what I did there)?
1) Judas Priest "Defenders of the Faith"
2) Iron Maiden "The Number of the Beast"
3) Black Sabbath " Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" (also one of my favorite album covers)
4) Motorhead " Snake Bite Love" . It just sounds so dirty and filthy. And the album cover is BOSS!!!

Death Metal
1) Carcass "Heartwork"
2) Death "Scream Bloody Gore"
3) Entombed "Left Hand Path"
4) Obituary "Slowly we Rot"

Various metal from around the world
1) Sepultura "Arise"
2) Kreator "Pleasure to Kill". I just love how it sounds so fast and out of control. It's almost like they just went in there and tried to play as fast as humanly possible without everything falling apart.
3)Overkill "Bloodletting" I really dig the raw as an infected dog bite production values on this one. Slick it is not
4) Mercyful Fate "Don't Break the Oath"

I'm just going to dump some stuff I've liked for a while:
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun & Welcome to Sky Valley
Opeth - Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Godflesh - Streetcleaner, Selfless, Merciless EP, In a World Lit Only By Fire
Ministry - The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, Psalm 69
Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard, Terrifyer (all their stuff is good though)
High on Fire - The Art of Self-Defense, Blessed Black Wings, Death Is this Communion, De Vermis Mysteriis
The Locust - Plague Soundscapes
Cave In - Until Your Heart Stops
Slayer - everything from Show No Mercy through Seasons in the Abyss (although Divine Intervention, Chirst Illusion and especially World Painted Blood have their moments)
Metallica - All the eighties stuff, although the only album I don't really like is St. Anger
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity, Irony Is a Dead Scene EP
Pantera - everything from Cowboys from Hell through The Great Southern Trendkill
Converge - everything they do is good, but Jane Doe, You Fail Me & All We Love We Leave Behind if I have to pick
Napalm Death - Scum, The Code Is Red, Long Live the Code (lots I haven't heard yet)
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Pierced from Within, Self-Titled
Megadeth - Rust in Piece above everything, but Peace Sells..., Countdown to Extinction, End Game and Dystopia are good too.
Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness, Heartwork
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions..., Need to Control, Kill Trend Suicide, Sounds of the Animal Kingdom
Type O Negative - Slow Deep and Hard, Bloody Kisses, October Rust
Mastodon - Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye
Black Sabbath - everything from the self-titled through Sabotage (I listened to Heaven and Hell and it didn't really do it for me but I'll have to give the Dio stuff another go one day)
Clutch - Self-Titled, Elephant Riders, Earth Rocker, Psychic Warfare (not really metal, but they are associated with the metal scene and play metal festivals)
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone, Come My Fanatics
Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape (need to hear more of these guys - unique band)
Voivod - Killing Technology, Dimensional Hatross, Nothingface, Angel Rat, The Outer Limits
Strapping Young Lad - City, Alien
Gorguts - Obscura
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East, Stained Class (need to hear more - I hated operatic vocals for years and I'm trying to ease into them)

I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out, but I'll try to add more recent stuff later.

Lots of great, classic stuff in your list. Brutal Truth's Need to Control is an all-time classic album, and I can't say enough great things about Godflesh and JK Broadrick's myriad of other projects. Pitch Shifter is another one to check out if you like Godflesh, Ministry, and other industrial metal. Napalm Death is probably my all-time favorite band (with Mitch Harris being a HUGE influence on my own guitar playing), and there is 30 years of material to explore. I think you'll find their progression from blasting grindcore to the experimental extreme metal band that they are today very interesting. Great list!

A few things I forgot:

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger, Superunknown
Botch - We Are the Romans, American Nervoso
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
Helmet - Strap It on, Meantime, Betty
White Zombie - Le Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1, Astro-Creep 2000...
Nile - Black Seeds of Vengenence, Annihilation of the Wicked
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Blessed Are the Sick, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
Unsane - Scattered, Smothered and Covered, Sterilize
Isis - Oceanic
Neurosis - Enemy of the Sun, Through Silver in Blood, The Eye of Every Storm
Dream Theater - Images and Words, Awake
Eyehategod - Dopesick, Take as Needed for Pain
Prong - Rude Awakening
Motorhead - Ace of Spades, No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, 1916, Sacrifice (naming a favorite Motorhead album almost seems besides the point - it's the whole package that makes it special)
Deftones - White Pony, Diamond Eyes
Fu-Manchu - King of the Road
Discordance Axis - The Unalienable Dreamless
Gridlink - Longhena
Coroner - Mental Vortex
Crowbar - Self-Titled
Daughters - Hell Songs
Alice in Chains - Dirt, Jar of Flies, "Tripod" (some of the new stuff is really good, but it's just not the same)
Leviathan - Scar Sighted
Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments, Lysol, Houdini

I'm going to stop there.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to going through the Napalm Death discography. "Scum" is actually the first grindcore album I ever heard (a friend of mine gave it to me because it wasn't what he was expecting) and I hated it at first, but I kept it and would listen to it from time to time and I eventually came around on it. I had a Pitchshifter cassette at one point - www.pitchshifter.com, I think - that I picked up at a flea market and I liked it, but it's been long enough ago that I don't remember much.

Whoops. That is indeed a major oversight on my part. So how about I add their "Metal on Metal" album to my Canadian metal list? I always liked that one, and the title track to me is classic metal at it's best.

The Melvins- Gluey Porch Treatments
Morbid Angel- Altars Of Madness
Soundgarden- Superunknown

My list is quite a bit different nowadays.

Actually, to tell y'all the truth, the more classic metalcore albums I listen to, the more I start to realize that old school metalcore and mathcore may actually be my favorite style of metal. The Shai Hulud album I already mentioned of course, Destroy The Machines by Earth Crisis, Until Your Heart Stops by Cave In, Jane Doe by Converge, Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child by Norma Jean, Where Blood And Fire Bring Rest by Zao, Calculating Infinity by The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc. It's all great stuff!

Old teenage metal elitist me would be appalled by modern day me haha.

I've also listened to more grindcore (and powerviolence and screamo even though they're not metal), beatdown hardcore, crossover thrash, and crust punk recently. Punk and metal just go great together!

How much more black could this be?

And the answer is: none. None more black.

I feel like I needed this thread to get out of my classic rock phase. Well, I put on the first 2 Deicide albums and first 3 Morbid Angel albums and they SLAYED.
