Do you really need to repeat that Sonic's creator thinks the designs are awful? We get it, it's bad enough to say it's not faithful to the source material.
With that said, looks like a broken promise. Ben Swchwarts as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Robotnik would have been a perfectly fine cast. While Carrey does steal the show, it feels mostly like he's just playing Jim Carrey and not a goofy yet intimidating scientist. I think Mark Hamill could have done the role for Robotnik perfectly (or he could end up acting like the Joker, which a lot of people are fearing for with the new Chucky movie coming along.) IIRC, the director of Deadpool is on board with the project, so to see him approving what we got is saddening.

I am sorry for repeating it ok, I will stop.

They wasted both Ben Swchwarts Jim Carrey talent on this awful movie. And agree MArk Hamill could have been a good Robotnik/Eggman. It also sad the original director of Deadpool 1 is involved in this movie. And even though I do not think Deadpool 1 is a great as everyone says it is, it still sad to see him go from Deadpool to this trash. Such a bad waist of great talent. I hope Pokémon Detective Pikachu does better critically and commercially as this upcoming Sonic movie is going to be terrible.

LOL, that was so funny, best quote ever to sum up the upcoming movie.

I think the question here is, did any of us actually think this sort of thing would turn out well? I mean, taking something as cartoony, as over-the-top as Sonic and setting it on Earth, with a cast of mostly real actors? It didn't work for He-Man, it didn't work for Super Mario Bros, and, well, it doesn't look like it's going to work for pool ol' Sonic, either.

That being said, some of us out there just want a bad movie. They can be comforting in their own way. I about died when I saw the trailer for Sonic, not because I hated it, but because it looks like exactly the kind of movie I was hoping it would be. As someone who saw Masters of the Universe, Super Mario Bros, and Street Fighter in the theaters as a child / young adult, I can tell you that, yes, at the time, I thought they were terrible. But as I've grown and looked back on them, and watched them over again, I've come to appreciate them for what they are - bad movies, but movies that are so unapologetic in their badness that they demand your attention, like a 12-car pileup on the freeway.

SMB had Dennis Hopper stealing every scene he was in. SF had Raul Julia giving an incredibly hammy, over-the-top performance as Bison, and even though the actor was slowly dying as the film wore on, he gave it his all, knowing it would be his last film and that he was too committed to his craft to give anything less than his best effort. While Jim Carrey seems to be in perfect health, his Robotnik performance in the trailer seems to fall right in line with Hopper's Koopa and Julia's Bison. In effect, these movies were more about the villains chewing up the scenery than the heroes saving the day, and if the Sonic movie can continue that tradition, well, at least it has that going for it.

(As an aside, on the subject of how Sonic looks in the trailer, in my eyes it's not any worse than how the Goombas looked in the SMB movie. Just sayin'.)

This just doesn't seem like the kind of movie that would be made today, and feels like a time capsule, a relic of bad 80's and 90's filmmaking where nearly every movie based on a TV show or video game was nothing more than a quick cash-in. Granted, there were exceptions and unexpected hits like Mortal Kombat (the first one, at least) and TMNT (the first one, again!) but after the Masters of the Universe film kicked my butt as a child, I lowered my expectations going forward, and learned to embrace these films for what they are: mindless fun, and a fair way to kill a few hours on a hot Summer afternoon.

Do I think Sonic will be a good film? No way! But do I think it will be fun to watch, in a shut-your-brain-off sort of way? Absolutely. As terrible as it may or may not be, if it spawns a few memorable lines, such as "Trust the fungus," from SMB or "...it was Tuesday," from Street Fighter, then I think it'll be all worth it. Even Mortal Kombat had its quotable moments, such as "This is the part where you fall down," or "Those were $500 shades, a**hole!" I could go on, but even the worst movies usually have some redeeming qualities. My wife loves Batman & Robin for that very reason, and as bad as that flick was, Arnie's scene-stealing Mr. Freeze will always have a place in our cold, icy hearts. "Tonight's forecast: A FREEEEEZE IS COMING!!"

All I can say is, I'm willing to give the Sonic movie a chance. In a situation like this, I think that's all you can really do.

Isn’t this at least 15 years too late?

I haven't seen a creepier lead character since Howard the Duck! The fact that they gave him a vaguely human body is so off-putting. Who in the hell signed off on this??

Only time will tell it just does not look promising, the big mistake was going live action, heck even the not so good Ratchet & Clank movie did the right thing going animated, which is where Sonic belongs, As franchises that are cartoony or over-the-top.

It is when Sonic started getting a bad rep in more recent titles. It should have came out when the franhcise was in a better state.

Exactly, in fact it makes Howard the Duck look respectable, heck you are right who in the hell signed off on this, it should have not been made like this. It should have been a CGI animated movie or even a hand drawn movie like the 90's Sonic Anime feature at least that works. This does not, and mind you a CGI/Live Action hybrid Sonic Movie was made by fans and that did not work great, but at least it was a low budget fan movie, this is not.

I actually think Jim Carey will be OK—kind of a return to his silly Ace Ventura days.

Sadly the best part but even that is questionable as it looks more like Sonic 06 Robotnik/Eggman and not most versions of the character.
