The New Bond?

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 28th, 2019, 5:01 pm

I don't know if it's a publicity stunt or what, but I hear the next "Bond" is going to be a black woman?? If this was going to be some kind of 007 spin-off I'd be all for it, but this makes no sense as a replacement for Daniel Craig. This is like replacing Indiana Jones with a Chinese woman!

Personally I think Craig is the best Bond ever, and I think he could stick around for another 10 years in the role if he wanted to.

If they actually go through with this, I think the franchise is OVER. Remember the New Coke?

Thoughts?

As a huge Bond fan, I'm struggling with this myself. As I understand it, Bond (Craig) will start the movie retired, and Lashana Lynch will be a new agent that has been issued the 007 number.

Depending how they play it, that could be cool if Bond is brought out of retirement and has to save the day. Something like she is given the 007 number, is doubted by Bond, but looks really good in the role for the majority of the movie. In the end Bond is needed to save the day, beds 007, and Lynch is given another role at MI6. But they've already kinda played that card with Naomi Harris as the new Moneypenny.

I hate to be "that guy," but if the next 007 is a black woman, I'll happily stick with the previous movies and let the franchise go. Part of me wonders if that'll happen to me anyway, as whomever is given the role will likely be younger than me for the first time ever. It could be the natural evolution of being a Bond fan, I don't know.

Either way, I'm looking forward to this next film hoping it will excite me for the franchise's future, but actually expecting to be leaving it behind afterwards. It's kind of a sad place to be, given how much I've loved the movies (even the bad ones) up to this point.

Martini shaken and fingers crossed.

I like the above theory. That would be cool. Otherwise, it’s just too weird, though in 2019, not surprising in the least.

I know some fans are struggling with the new Little Mermaid’s race change. That doesn’t bother me, but the new 007 does.

I’m anything but sexist or anything against anyone. But when the sequel to Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, was a woman, I just couldn’t will myself to play it. It really irritated me. I don’t even think there was an option to play as a guy. Even if not 007, at least a guy, someone I can relate to. It was so ridiculous. This despite the game looking amazing and my brother liking it. I simply can’t play as a girl.

Breaker - I like your theory! It seems plausible. I will be crushed when Craig leaves the role for good.

Craig's departure will be tough. I think Casino Royale and Skyfall are two all-time great Bond movies. Quantum of Solace is underrated, in my opinion. Spectre is a big mess... the whole Austin Powers / Dr. Evil half-brothers thing is absurd and unnecessary. The Bond universe has never had continuity, and it doesn't need it now. In the eyes of this Bond fan, trying to tie all of Craig's movies together was a mistake.

But I would love it if a new actor allowed them to produce more than 5 movies in 14 years. I don't really know if that is Craig's timetable or the producers, but it feels extremely slow.

I thought the Spectre storyline with Blofeld was interesting. In the very first movie, Dr. No, 007 is asked by Dr. No if he wants to join Spectre. Of course 007 refuses. There may have been another movie that Blofeld mentioned 007 being a part of Spectre. Going back to Dr. No, it seems like Dr. No and in effect Spectre, knows Bond very well, better than you would expect them to know Bond. Before the new storyline in the most recent movie Spectre, in the first movies in the 1960's, I'd wondered whether there was something deeper between Spectre and 007 going all the way to Dr. No. It wasn't a surprise when the new storyline has Blofeld as his brother.

From my perspective, the half-brother thing is off limits for Bond simply because Austin Powers already did it as a joke. A series that exists purely to parody Bond, and Bond copies it? Too lazy for my taste.

But like I said in the 2600 Pac man thread, expectations play a huge role in enjoying something. And because I get fully nerded out over Bond, my expectations probably lead me to want too much from a new Bond movie.

Don't get me wrong - as I said earlier, I LOVED Skyfall and Casino Royale, and enjoy Quantum more than most. But Spectre was a distinct disappointment for me. Here's hoping that whatever this one is called is a fun ride.

Yeah not going to see this bond. I haven't even loved the Daniel Craig ones to be honest; i prefer Connery, Moore, and Brosnan. The movies were more fun back then; and seemed more realistic with less CGI (excluding Die Another Day of course, haha.) The Daniel Craig ones feel like Bourne Supremacy movies; too serious and dark.

The times they are a changin', I get it; but it's not my cup of tea and i'll probably just let the franchise go at this point. None of these Dinsney remakes (on a similar note) have re-captured the magic of the originals for me either; and i think i am done bothering with them. I have no problem with movies with diverse casts, but when they are shoe-horned into remakes of old classics it seems out of place. Like every Disney movie needs a gay character now for some reason; etc. etc.

And now they are remaking Home Alone? Leave the John Hughes movies alone PLEASE!

Bond has been stale for awhile, so changing up the formula is welcome on my end.

As for Daniel Craig, yes, he is probably the best bond overall. However, he has been wanting out of this series since after quantum of solace. He personally doesn't enjoy playing James Bond. The only reason he did spectre and skyfall was money/contracts, he said many times his heart really wasn't in it.

I say change it up. The franchise has been on life support already for awhile, with a lead that wants to move on and do other things.
