I watched The Lighthouse last night on Amazon Prime. It's a pretty amazing looking movie, filmed in black and white and also in 4:3 perspective! It makes the movie look like a nightmare, and it is. It stars Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson.
I'm not surprised it was the same guy who did The Witch (one of my favs) because the general storyline is the same. Two men working in isolation over the course of several weeks. Things start going wrong, they start drinking and getting destructive.
There's some really bizarres sights like a beautiful mermaid washing up on the rocks but since the men are losing their mind you don't know what's real. I was kind of mesmerized by this film, although as usual it was too long and drawn out.

I like quirky/mysterious (but not scary) movies like this and enjoyed it thoroughly. Acting was terrific and story, as it was, was compelling.
Another movie along these lines (though more artsy and “out there”) is “mother!”. But a LOT of people hated that one. Lol.
Any other recommendations? I watched Vivarium on Amazon recently, and it was OK.

I gotta disagree! I watched this DVD about two weeks ago and was thoroughly disappointed. Even after searching Wikapedia and IMBD I still have no idea what I spent an 1:50 of my life watching.....
It is a beautifully filmed movie that needed a sea alien or a ghost! Any kind of a creepy adversary to enhance the feeling of isolation that this film did a great job of conveying.
I did enjoy The VVitch, consider myself to be of average intelligence but beware of The Lighthouse!

Hey, you got a mermaid. What else could you want?
I didn't realize it was also available on DVD/Blu Ray. Are there any extras?

Hmm interesting. I loved 'The Witch' but thought 'Mother' was one of the worst films I've ever seen (EVER SEEN). Trying to be edgy and artful; it did not work at all in my opinion!
