Under The Radar Rock/Metal Music Thread.

Postby WorstInTheLobby » June 8th, 2021, 1:54 pm

After seeing people talk about the AWESOME Band The Dead Daisies in the New Music Alert thread.I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread for Rock and Metal Bands throughout the years and decades who never quite hit it big that most people have not heard of. I have a few in mind that I will start with.

First off for me is a band called Tyketto they came out in the late 80's and early 90's and are still going today. They are a tremendous Blues Based Hard Rock Band. There were 2 eras of the band essentially it started with great singer Danny Vaughan on their first two album Strength in Numbers and Dont Come Easy. But in 1995 Danny had to take a leave of absence due to his wife being sick and they brought is Steve Augeri of later Journey Fame to sing for their 1995 album Shine. Here are some of the key Tyketto Songs for you all to enjoy

This first one is Forever Young probably their most popular song.

Next is Standing Alone a great great ballad

Next is a great Party Anthem called Lay Your Body Down.

And Lastly my personal Favotie Tyketto song Let It Go from The Shine album I love this song so much that I have been using this song as my entrance theme when I'mwrestling on Independant Shows in the US for almost 15 years now.

Overlooked bands? How about Phantom Blue, an all girl metal band that were on the go from the late 80's to the early/mid 90's? They had a genuinely talented singer in Gigi Hangach, who could scream like a banshee one minute and sing the sweetest ballad the next. And they also featured the late, great Michelle Meldrum on guitar, who not only had the gift of riff, but could also shred leads with the best of them. They released a couple full lengths, an EP and a odds and sods compilation album with a bunch of unreleased numbers on it. All their albums are good, but for me, the best is their second LP "Built to Perform", which showed them moving away from the hair metal stylings of their self titled debut and taking a more groove oriented and heavier approach to their songwriting. Which turned out to be a brilliant move artistically. But unfortunately, did not really translate into mass commercial success, and as a result, they broke up a few years later. A shame, really, since I feel they more than held their own with their male contemporaries.

Anyway, here is their second album in it's entirety. Check it out and by all means crank it up...

Never heard of them before but that's some pretty good stuff kinda sounds like a harder edged Femme Fatale type band :)

1. Devil Doll

Really obscure rock/metal. Genius, madness, macabre ...

These links are to some of my favorite LP's from them:

"The Girl who was ... Death".

"Eliogabalus"

2. Fields of the Nephilim

This rock band never quite found the limelight but they are outstanding live performers. Inspired by 80's goth pop outfits like Sister's of Mercy, Nephilim have a much heavier sound that occasionally dips into Doom/Death Metal sub genre territory. The examples herewith are more user friendly and encompasses the band at the height of their popularity.

3. Sigh

Metal band from Japan. Quirky, if not completely mad, they are largely underground. They started off in extreme early death and black metal but have evolved a completely original style. I generally prefer their earlier more primitive sound.

4. Epica
Band was fairly well known in Europe but not so much on these shores. Seen them live a few times. I am not generally a huge fan of synth metal outfits like Epica or Nightwish but both make very pleasing, if not exceptional live viewing.

Femme fatale... I've heard the name before, but I've never actually sat down and gave 'em a listen. Think I may have to do that soon....;-)

Here's another band that went under the radar. The name of the band is Picture. They were just an good, no frills heavy metal band from Holland that certainly knew how to write some very catchy tunes, as the following musical example below will attest to. When I first head this song, I liked it so much that I must have listened to it at least 10 times in a row before I wanted to listen to another song of theirs. A very straight to the point song with a killer opening riff and a chorus to die for.

And if interested, here is the link for the entire album this song is off of. Actually, more of a playlist of the songs off the album..

And here is the link for the Diamond Dreamer album, which preceded Eternal Dark. Another solid slab of early 80's Euro metal.

Here is the link to a playlist for their Heavy Metal Ears album. Cheesy title for an album for sure. But again, there is some good quality Euro metal on display here

And finally, here is the link to their page on metal-archives.com if you want to read up on their history, lineups, discography, album reviews and more...
