House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn (Arcade)

Postby Zack Burner » September 29th, 2019, 8:23 pm

Disclaimer: I have not exactly played this game, only seen some Youtube videos.

Time for another arcade review, this time more recent! Several years later another HOTD has premiered and this time it's a mixture of old and new in one convenient package. Taking place a few years after the events in HOTD 4, at some luxurious mansion follows Kate Green from the previous game pairing up with James Taylor's little brother Ryan. Everything is going smoothly at the mansion with some great party when of course the undead strike. Armed with a machine gun Kate and Ryan do what they can to stop the undead and whoever is responsible for it. Primarily you have a machine gun, but in this game you get different weapons as well :D from grenades, shotgun, water bombs and incendiary rounds to name a few. If you're a gore fan, you'll be a little bit disappointed as vanquished zombies don't burst into meaty bits or cartoonish gore but disappear in flames. The only blood you'll see is when you get hit. After the prologue stage you get to choose which order you want to go and like previous games, your performance affects the endings. Two bosses return, The Chariot and the Hanged Man, but this time they're not pushovers like they were in the first game. For example, Chariot starts off with some tough armor and all you can do is stop his attacks, but midway through the fight you pick up a rocket launcher enabling you to create your own weakpoint on the foe (I recommend the torso or head for best results) and from that point on its smooth sailing. Two new foes make the cut, Priestess a giant octopus and finally Moon an enormous demon. The rescue mechanic from previous games returns which brings back the fun. Adding to the fun is of course the bad acting and dialogue, though the 4th game had some surprisingly good acting. If you find this at Dave and Busters hop on and play!

I tried the link and it looks like I was able to watch the entire game (46min).

I love the House of the Dead series but I'm not sure about the manic pacing. Also, it looks like a Resident Evil game in terms of scenery.

Still, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were ever made available on physical media. Is there any chance??

At long last, after playing it at Dave and Busters a few days ago, I can honestly say this one is my favorite in all the series. So much, I wish Switch gave us a port of this rather than a remake of the first game (not that I have anything against that). I love the fact that it returns some of the many factors that I loved about the first two games: bad acting/writing, the rescue mechanic, and from the 3rd, choosing your stages in any order. So far I've cleared 3 of the 5 stages where I took out the High Priestess (the giant octopus), and the remade Chariot (a lot harder than his first appearance) but died at the claws of Hanged Man (also harder than his first apperance). There's another new boss, The Moon the final foe of the game which I will hopefully beat someday. Based on what I experienced, this is a lot of fun with the changing of different weapons, and it's at a respectable level of challenge. I love the new zombie forms, such as ninja or rocker which is pretty cool. If anyone is a fan of the HOTD series, check this one out!
