Eye of the Beholder (SNES)

Time for another review of an SNES port of a famous computer game! Based on the Dungeons and Dragons franchise, you create a party of 4 and then traverse a series of dungeons to stop a malevolent monster called a Beholder that's terrorizing a town. You'll have to solve puzzles, battle monsters, negotiate with some friendly characters, and of course get lost in mazes (always the real fun). You view the action from a 1st person perspective and variety is key in characters that can battle monsters, open doors, negotiate, cast spells, heal, etc. A good example of variety is my example: Paladin (powerful fighter, negotiating, and can cast some healing spells), Thief/Mage/Fighter (versatile character that can open doors with lockpick, fight monsters, and cast spells), Cleric (heals people and offers support), and Mage (caster of powerful spells). You'll encounter a wide range of frightening monsters such as Khobolds, worms, zombies, skeletons, displacer beasts (six-legged puma like monsters with a powerful mace tail), and the Beholder itself (a floating cyclopean monster with many hair eyes, can block spells and is resistant to weapons). You'll need to find some key items including a wand that can push the Beholder into a spike trap. The graphics do the job well and there is some music, but I always keep it off to add some atmosphere. If you like dungeon crawlers you can't go wrong with this game.
