Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti (NES Japan)

Postby Zack Burner » August 24th, 2020, 8:24 am

While the arcade version went for gore and disturbing content, this game offers a lighthearted approach to horror. There's plenty of horror references such as Michael Jackson's Thriller, the Exorcist, Evil Dead II, The Fly (Jeff Goldblum version), Jaws, and more. You play as Rick reincarnated when a lightning bolt strikes his grave, like what happened in one of the Friday the 13th movies. He comes equipped with a cleaver (looks more like an axe to me), though on some occasions you'll wield a shotgun with limited rounds. You must rescue Jennifer from the evil Pumpkin King and many monsters. You won't find any blood in this game, although a few defeated enemies show some cartoonish "gore" (getting cut in half). You'll also find if you're lucky you'll find some crystal orbs which will unlock some secrets to the ending including the buildup to the intro to the arcade game. Once you beat it a few times, you'll have the whole thing memorized and although there is a password feature, the game's pretty short. There's no difficulty meter, and it's almost pretty straightforward. Worth playing for some novelty but don't get too attached to it.

Sounds really cool but what's this game about? There's loads of cool references here but little with regards to describing game mechanics etc?

I just read the arcade review and whilst that mostly makes sense your reviews ask your audience to have quite a history of games built up in their heads?

Sorry about that readers, this is a platform/beat em up though I think more the former than the latter. Wanpaku for your information, means "Naughty" in Japanese. You get cutsey health restoring items such as candy and hamburgers, though before you fight the final boss you can get two sodas to fully restore health.

Ok thanks for clarifying. :-)

This game has now been released on PS4 and Xbox 1 in the Namco collection museum NES collection. After playing the game, you will understand why it was never released anywhere outside Japan. It does not play like Splatterhouse and it looks horrible.

I've seen worse. Looks like this is available as a repro cart - in English no less!

I liked the game enough to finish it. You don't have much health in the beginning but you level up quickly as you defeat enemies and there are frequent food drops so it only took me a few attempts. Not a game I can see myself returning to much but it's a good seasonal game for a couple hours of simple fun. Lots of references and cameos from various horror flicks.
