Falcon Patrol 2 (C64)

Postby _craker_ » August 19th, 2023, 4:30 pm

Here's one I keep coming back to. It's a horizontal, two way scrolling shooter. Your jet aircraft (with VTOL capabilities) vs waves of helicopters, black ones drop flak batteries, the red ones shoot at you.

I like the control you exert on the aircraft, there's a real strategy to the gameplay. Do you go slowly to creep up on your prey? Or shoot off at high speed when one appears unexpectedly? You can shoot horizontally or diagonally too, but most ofyour lives will be used up in collisions with your enemy, who has a habit of unpredictable movement.

The landscape is colourful but cycles repeatedly, the three types of helicopters don't change but move around with more menace in later levels (so I believe, the black ones were dropping lots of flak batteries after level 4).

The game came out in 1984 so probably qualifies as an early C64 game (and it's one I had back in the day). The sound is fine, the graphics work nicely without being flashy, it all moves along at a decent speed, but there's not much change in gameplay from start to where I normally lose my last life. I'd go on a B+. High scrore, 5700.

I just tried the Spectrum port. Quite poor by comparison!

I sure wouldn't mind seeing the C64 Critic take a crack at this one. Hint hint!

It is an update of the Activision Atari2600 game Chopper command. Now instead of helicopters it has jets but the game play looks to be the same. Vastly improved graphics and sound with the ability to refuel. I never played it but I do want to now. It is abandonware so it can be stuck on a black floppy disc and played by the C64 Critic. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention.

If anyone happens to come across one on floppy disk, by all means let me know. A quick perusing of Ebay and I'm only finding cassettes. It's all I can stomach to deal with the long floppy loads at times, there's no way I can go back to preparing and eating an entire 7-course meal while waiting for a cassette game to load (usually only to find it didn't end up loading anyway, and having to restart the process all over again).

When you said cartridge, I think you meant cassette.
