Here's another set of re-reviews I wanted to get out before the summer was up. Both have been downgraded slightly but I still hold them in high regard.

Let's hear your thoughts...

Time to review the Game Gear port of Outrun and complete the trifecta of 8-bit Sega ports of Outrun. :)

There's actually no need for the 3D glasses in Outrun 3D. The game has a 2D mode by pressing start during the attract mode and then selecting 2D with the d-pad.

I liked both reviews. And I think you presented your gear shifting problem well, leaving the reader an accurate view of what the issue was that you encountered.

In Sega's defense, they were stuck between a rock and a hard place thanks to limited buttons. Other than going with auto shifting (which goes against the spirit of the game), the only alternative would've been a dedicated gear shifting button with braking remapped to downward presses of the d-pad.

So instead of unexpected gear shifts, you'd get unexpected applications of your brakes anytime you inadvertently triggered a left/down or right/down diagonal. A slightly lesser problem perhaps than suddenly ending up in low gear, but still an annoyance.

How hard would it have been to program the game to ignore any diagonal inputs?

Good reviews. With your penchant for the greatness of Out Run, I find it kinda surprising you’ve never reviewed Super Hang On on the Genesis. Methinks you’d dig that for sure,

I honestly hadn't even thought about that.

You're right, it seems like it should've been trivial for the programmers to code the game to ignore diagonal inputs where gear shifting is concerned. Would present a slight issue though if you go to shift in a curve, but that's an infrequent at best occurrence in these ports.

Good stuff. Tell us more about the 3D glasses.. Is the visual effect enough to make it worth it? Being 80s tech, I figured it’d be really disappointing. But it is an accessory I’ve considered buying for like 20 years, and just never pulled the trigger because of the price.

Almost all of the Critic's 3D Master System reviews have been glowing when it comes to the effect. Space Harrier seems to be the game to show it off.

Can you just wear a normal pair of 3D glasses with these games, or do you NEED the official Sega ones for the effect to work properly?
