Time to take a break from the football reviews. This is a re-review of Top Hunter, downgraded from C to D.

I keep trying to find a great game here. There’s so many things done right but I can’t disagree it’s not the best game on the system.

It looks interesting. Your review paints a different picture. Not a good one either. I had never heard of it, though the majority of NEO Geo games I played them in the arcades. So I liked the shooter games the most. Top Hunter was originally an arcade game. Probably why the content was so shallow.

I'm pretty sure I've played this on my multi-cart, but I can't say for sure.. that's never a good sign. This one looks decent enough in gameplay videos, but your review sounds on point.

'Thanks for the review! Been eyeing this as one to try for my Switch for a while, need to check if it is on my Neo Geo Mini arcade to give it a whirl...

I played this game on SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 on Wii. I thought it was enjoyable.

Opinions are all over in terms of the best NG platformer between Blue's Journey, Spin Master and Top Hunter. I prefer Spin Master, it just seems right at home on the Neo's arcade system. One thing not mentioned about Top Hunter is the characters do have SF2 style, for lack of a better term, special moves. Certainly not the greatest platform game ever made, but I give this one a solid B. If you've got a NGCD this one is still reasonably priced and worth it.
Also if you're playing this on an MVS, switch to AES mode and you'll get extra stages.

A game like this would probably fare better on other systems, but the Neo Geo is just loaded with great arcade titles.

That's interesting comparing those 3 platformers. I've only spent a few hours with Top Hunter in the past and while it was underwhelming imo, I didn't know special moves or correct tactics. But the graphics are certainly amazing. I'm going to try to get into this game. It's on my Neo SD and might pick it up on MVS one day. But I think Top Hunter is better than Blue's Journey. which is really not that good imo. Spin Master is fun.

I agree, I don't see the appeal of Blue's Journey at all. I think some people will give NG games love just for being on the system, but if you put Blue's Journey on the SNES or Genesis nobody would care about it IMO. We've all got different tastes, but I think Top Hunter is worth a go.
