"Playing Gorf on the 5200 is like trying to play basketball on an ice rink."

I love this comparison.

Actually, I'd totally watch ice-ketball. The Critic just invented a great new sport.

Your writing is improving in style and flow; and you've got a great foundation to build around.... you've come a long way since you began this site.

These might be the best 5200 game reviews I've read anywhere.

Minor fix on Gorf: Second stage is Laser Attack, not Galaxians which is of course missing from all the early home versions.

And this time it seems you tossed in a Jack Nicholson reference?

Yeah I was trying to imply that Laser Attack is inspired by Galaxians (groups of ships swooping down). But I agree it's confusing considering the omitted stage was called Galaxians.

I think that Jack Nicholson reference was inadvertent.

Defender is indeed a great title, the 5200 had so many excellent games...but we all know the downfall of that console. I've never been a Gorf fan so I cant comment on that one.

I’ve always been bad at Defender. Haven’t played the 5200 version; the arcade Defender had so much going on that my brain just couldn’t keep up.

In high school, two classmates played Defender at the same time, with one shooting and operating direction, while the other used the smart bombs and hyperspace. They put up some amazingly high scores, and it was always interesting watching them play. I read that Defender arcade was one of the best pure money-makers of the era because it was so incredibly hard. A quarter, if I was lucky, would last 5.2 seconds.

I’m surprised Gorf scored so poorly considering how much VGC likes this game. But this is the 5200 and their amazing joystick, so I guess it makes sense.

Defender for 5200 deserves it's A- , maybe higher, it is masterfully programmed, the programmer Steve Baker really knew the hardware. Back then we loved all the pixel rezzing and pixel shrapnel FX.
