2024/2/19: Sega Genesis: Spider-Man

Postby VideoGameCritic » February 19th, 2024, 12:17 pm

I've been wanting to update this review for a long time! Finally I've done it justice, I think.

Next I'll need to revisit the Sega CD game.

Thoughts?

"You begin on a city street where you save an old lady from a mugger. So why is that policeman attacking me?"

Because the Kingpin tricked everyone into thinking you're the bad guy. That's the basic premise of the game. The opening cutscene is the Kingpin saying you're the bad guy, and the cutscene when you beat the first level is Spider-Man complaining about being smeared by the Kingpin. What's not to get?

Well well, A J. Jonah Jameson...

Anyway, this game does the Spider-man license justice as virtually all the SNES Spider-man games stink badly, except for the rare game Deadly Menace which sadly is a Japan only game, had that game got translated, the fans would have gotten a winner.

Maximum Carnage was also quite good Spiderman game.

Maximum Carnage is quite average gameplay-wise but it's hard not to fall in love with it, it's an SNES title that manages to have a rock/metal soundtrack that doesn't sound lame compared to the Mega Drive. Rare for a game that wasn't Capcom to nail that type of music on Super Nintendo.

The only good Spider-Man game was on the Atari2600. The rest of them have been a disappointment, as they could not match the quality of the first game.

Like all Marvel heroes, the answer to "what is the best Spider Man game?" is "the Marvel vs Capcom games they were in".

Also, Spider Man 2 on PS2 was great.

There a loads of good Spiderman games out and the current one on the PS5 looks amazing.
