2024/6/23: Atari XEGS: Donkey Kong Junior

Postby VideoGameCritic » June 23rd, 2024, 12:44 pm

I know what you're thinking: "didn't he already review this?" No, apparently it fell through the cracks!

For newer readers, I want to clarify that "Atari XEGS" refers to the entire line of Atari 8-bit computers that started with the Atari 800. It was followed by the XL series of computers, and then the XE line. The XEGS was the console-ized version of the XE computer.

Thoughts on this review?

Awesome, the Xegs section is a mini treasure trove for me. I love it. You have the cart for Rescue on Fractulus but you have never reviewed it. I loved that game. I used to live in this ghastly place called Plaistow in East London and Rescue on Fractulus was one of the only lights in my life.

Good to see DKJ getting some love. It has always been a fave of mine.

Curious how you think it compares to the 7800 version, which I have played to death.

Just as with DK, I always found DK Jr to be masterfully programmed on the A8 platform. The only gripe is what you mentioned,it is tight quarters with little room for error. It's easy to even slip off the little grass patches if you aren't careful.

Side subjext -- In comparison, the more powerful 7800's DK games have more detailed graphics, but with horrible TIA (2600) sounds which ruin the games for me. Thus I really love the AA homebrew Donkey Kong PK which added POKEY chip sounds to that (7800) version.

Totally agree, Donkey Kong PK and Popeye are the best games on the Atari 7800 in my opinion.

I like Atari XG reviews, this system was not popular in Spain (in fact I think it wasn't released) so it is a novelty for me.

Donkey Kong Jr turned out really well considering that it was programmed by a different person than who did the amazing Donkey Kong port..they had a lot to live up to

Glad to hear junior is wearing a diaper this time and not a wife beater in this version.

I'm a fan of Donkey Kong Jr. on the NES, partially because it's more forgiving, but this version looks closer to the original arcade in terms of difficulty. The arcade game is a quarter munching beast.
