2024/12/8: Nintendo Switch: Contra: Operation Galuga

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 8th, 2024, 9:12 am

This new Contra captures the "feel" of the originals like no other. If it were a bit more polished (it did crash on me once) it might have been in A territory.

I think this review is pretty good.

Let me know what you think.

I only played the demo and I was kind of annoyed by the "tutorial stage". But it gets better after that?
Also, you seem very critical of a game you also seem to like.

I also played the demo and thought it was c plus. It is the reason, I did not buy the game. Though Jan sales, it is a maybe after this review.

I don't recall playing a tutorial stage so don't let that dissuade you.

The story mode however you should skip, as it's just wall to wall text.

Stick with arcade mode and you'll have a blast.

"Richers graphics" looks like a typo to me.

Graphics wise... sorta meh, looks like the usual Unity drivel. Outside of that, not at all a bad game and plays well enough.

Critic, try out Blazing Chrome and Iron Meat. Proper old school shooters.

Blazing Chrome is out of print and rather expensive on the Bay.

They will be reprinting Iron Meat since they sold their 4000 copy allotment. Another 4000 are apparently being reprinted and it will be expected to sell out rather quickly (within a day or two). Will end up one of those "> $100 Switch games on the Bay". Keep an eye out when they list the stock.

I think this game is around the C+ or B- territory - certainly by no means bad and will scratch the itch of Contra fans, but it's not quite amazing. I don't know if you've covered Hard Corps Uprising anymore, hell I don't know if it ever got a physical release, but it was one of my favourite games from the era of Xbox Live Arcade. That's sort of the "modern reimagining" of Contra that I loved the most.

Blazing Chrome is a must play! Iron Meat seems great as well, though I only played the demo.

Any chance the jumping lag is actually the Switch itself? No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the Switch to play lag-free when playing through the dock to a TV, and you know me... AV is my thing. I know all the tricks and nothing helps. Other consoles do not have the same problem on my setup. When I play UNdocked with my Hori connected controllers, there is zero lag. I'd be surprised if it really is the game itself.

Iron Meat

If you guys want Iron Meat physically it is available now. There are very few copies left and the Switch version flipped all 4000 copies in like 20 minutes. I do not expect this version to hold stock past today. Snooze or lose here.
