2026/9/10: Neo Geo: Ghost Pilots, Mutation Nation, Viewpoint

Postby VideoGameCritic » September 10th, 2026, 4:45 pm

Here are some Neo Geo "updated" reviews for your reading pleasure. The original ones were from 2004, so I figured you wouldn't mind!

All are pretty good. Viewpoint and Ghost Pilots took a slight hit on the grades, but Mutation Nation got a little boost from C- to C+. The slight changed grades were largely a function of how much fun I had playing them. Viewpoint was a bit of a pain, but Mutation Nation was pretty effortless. I noticed that Ghost Pilots felt a little repetitive at times.

Thoughts?

The Neo Geo reviews are great to see considering how the last 2 days have been so disappointing on that front.

I’m very much excited about the beat em library titles like Mutation Nation. I’ve been enjoying similar games like Burning Fight lately.

As far as Ghost Pilots, I just gave it a try again after checking out the review. It’s got some positives, and can be fun. I just don’t know how the game plays once one tries to go deep into the game. It’s really difficult in later levels.

I think with Viewpoint it’s a 1992 game and for a home console it pretty much destroys everything else out there. It’s also a lot more fun once one gets good at it, which takes time. I’m beginning to realize that most of these games it’s vital to have a memory card. At a certain point the first 2-3 levels should get skipped because they’re mastered already.

Edit: I’m pretty close to getting that N64 Viewpoint which I heard is a good game. It looks really cool.

3 gorgeous games, they look so fine. I bet the people who were going to get the new Neo Geo would be looking at these games and saying to themselves yes times 3
I can attest to Ghost Pilots being utterly fantastic. Yep, your plane is too big, yep it is hard but what is great about is the graphics are jaw dropping.
Think I played View point on something, I cannot remember what console it was on but as I loved Zaxxon I can understand why I would be intrigued. Think it might have been the ps1 and I was not impressed by it.

Mutation Nation is something I had not played it looks good.

I think you need to revisit Zaxxon Motherbase on the 32x as they sound very similar, but you didn’t seem to like that title. But your pros and cons in this review seem to mirror my feeling on Zaxxon Motherbase.

Last year when my nephew was in town I wanted him to play the Neo Geo.

And I thought the most exciting way would be for him to play Viewpoint with unlimited fire specials and being invincible. Of course my brother didn’t want any “violence” in any game so we had to play sports games.

Viewpoint is extremely hard. But getting past the first 3 levels without dying isn’t that hard. It’s from 4 on which any slight mistake means endless continues. It’s still my favorite game. I’ve began to think that Viewpoint and countless other Neo Geo games need to have a memory card being used to focus on the later levels.
