2013/7/4: Saturn: Bug Too!, Bug!, Primal Rage

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 4th, 2013, 11:51 am

My original Bug and Primal Review for the Saturn were pretty weak.  These new versions adjust the grades and add some meat.  Bug has been downgraded from a C to a D, and Primal Rage has been upgraded from a D to a B-.

I have been re-reviewing all the versions of Primal Rage, and I was really surprised by just how strong the Saturn version is.

Bug Too! is the single brand new review.

Is the save system any better in Bug Too?  How does it work?

It's honestly not surprising the Saturn had a strong version of Primal Rage since it was a 2D powerhouse. Still, if the games are overall mediocre I don't think that should bump the grade up that much (just because it is the best home version). Still, I enjoyed the reviews quite a lot.

Your Bug! Reviews are on the money and a 'D' grade is certainly appropriate.

I believe it's the same.  Just don't ask me to explain it.

Your review of Bug! has the wrong year for when Donkey Kong Country was originally released. It was actually released in 1994.

If I had been describing the action of the insect during the "game over" screen for the review, I would have used the word "buttocks" instead.

I didn't even know you could save. I own both of those games and I've never gotten to the first boss in either. I try to like them, but I always turn them off after one or two levels to play something fun.

Primal Rage is such a garbage game, who cares what the best home version is? That's like trying to search for the best port of Pit Fighter(both on Midway's Arcade Treasures 2).

Also, Donkey Kong Country doesn't scale their cgi sprites like Bug! does and the Saturn wasn't capable of anti-aliasing(neither was PSone), so of course there's going to be pixelation. Nintendo also had access to better cgi technology and required a special chip to get the game to run on the SNES.

Primal Rage isn't great, but it holds nostalgia for a lot of people so it is nice to have the best version. I'll have to boot up my Saturn copy and see if I like it more than the arcade port in Midway Arcade Treasures 2.

Also, should the pixelation be ignored in the review just because the system isn't capable of better graphics? If the game looks bad then it should be mentioned.

Wow Critic you are dead wrong about Bug B+.  A cracking game.  I remember when it came out on the Saturn.  There was nothing like it.  Superb stuff and so playable.  Bug 2 you are right about this one very inferior.  D+ also it was virtually unplayable.
