"Most people will quit at this point, which is
a shame considering a scenic snow zone is right around the corner."
What is with the fetish for snow-themed levels? They are mostly white....and boring looking in most games. If this game had a pirate-themed level, it would have surely scored higher...

Doesn't really look that bad in my opinion; I think maybe the Critic expected too much from the Genesis/Mega Drive.

I mean, this is the only other FMV in a Genesis/Mega Drive game, that I am aware of:

Yes, it's notably sharper, but far less colourful and animated.

The gameplay concept of Sonic 3D Blast is based on Sega's original game Flicky - in which you have to collect birds (or flicky's, whatever) too, but it's less tedious (and it looks a lot uglier). In fact, the European title of the game is even Sonic 3D: Flicky's Island instead of Sonic 3D Blast.

Well that is good to know, I was curious to see how they compare.

I've been playing Eliminate Down lately and it's nice to see a dissenting opinion about the game (in other words, I appreciate the fact that the Critic gave it only a C-).
I really, really don't like the level of visual clutter in the game -- there are too many objects onscreen that have no relevance to the gameplay, and in the first level the foreground layer of parallax scrolling actively gets in the way of visibility. And there's too much sprite breakup and flicker, with bullets that literally disappear because the designers wanted to show off so damn much.
In a game that wants to be this balls-hard, those sins are just about unforgivable.
