Have you played the recent Rayman games? They probably fit your desires the best of anything I can think of.
I was actually excited to tell you that the director of PN03 (Shinji Mikami) had made a fantastic action game called Vanquish a few years ago...but, as it turns out, it's a M-rated game. I didn't remember any objectionable content beyond shooting robots, but evidently there's a bunch of foul language and a couple of bloody moments.
Dragon's Crown is on the borderline. There are a couple of female character designs that are ridiculously exaggerated, but the game itself is a combination of an old-school beat-em-up and a loot-gathering fantasy game with gorgeous hand-painted artwork. It's meant to be played in groups, though.
I admit that I'm at a bit of a lost myself. One the one hand I really do want there to be more well-made all-ages games, and yet I admit that my two favorite recent games are Murder Simulator 1.0 (Hotline Miami) and a grotesque, nightmarish game filled with scatological imagery (The Binding of Isaac). I've definitely been desensitized on a personal level, but I do sympathize with your desire for cleaner games.

Josh- I didn't "come up empty" the first time, so I don't need to do anything to "refute" your claim.
There's tons of those in-between games available on Steam, way too damn many for me to list.

I'm not irritated, merely disappointed that you're writing off an entire generation.
Don't get why you're dismissing Steam though as plenty of "real men" play it(including the very manly Totalbiscuit).

Play the games you like. Josh doesn't like recent games, fine, nothing wrong with retrogaming. Vexer likes recent games and some of the past gens too I assume, that's fine too. Let's move on, alright?

And Steam don't count . . . we're talking consoles here. You know, what real men play on (sorry, I couldn't resist).
Steam is pretty great all the same. You should go over there and just grab a few games that appeal to you. It isn't a console replacement, but it should help you find some of what you want.
Splash- yes they do exist obviously and there is plenty of "diversity" in gaming, you're just not looking hard enough. Games most definitely do not feel "the same" today in the least. Platformers aren't as common anymore because of oversaturation during their heyday, so people got tired of them and were looking towards different experiences.
While that kind of stuff does "exist," it's very rare outside crap. Also find it amazing that even though there's a HUGE oversaturation of FPS games, that they're STILL popular. So why do fun genres like platformers and rhythm games die out due to "oversaturation" but not a genre that, really, wasn't even that fun when it was new IMO.
