There was a thread about them a while back, and then nothing.

There's actually been quite a few threads, but nothing ever got done about the oversight.  There's actually a Game Boy section on the menu above, but when you click it takes you to a GBA section (??????).  Not having original Game Boy review on this site is the equivalent to not having Genesis reviews.  It's a crucial piece of gaming history.

This is something I've too wondered about. It would be nice, but I know the VGC has a lot on his plate. There's a lot of nostalgia for me with the Gameboy. I was 6 when it came out and the idea of a handheld system was so amazing back then. I remember playing it at a restaurant in 1989 with my friend who had one (my parents never let me have one) and I had a blast playing Tetris and there was this great baseball game too.

He just said something about it back on the 11th. [smile]

So I imagine just a bit of patience is all it will take.

Hopefully when he starts to experience some of the better selections in the library, he'll perhaps be a bit more enthusiastic about it. Right or wrong, I get the impression when reading his posts here that his expectations are perhaps pretty low going in and that he's doing it perhaps more to placate his readers than out of personal interest.

When he starts to experience things like a lot of the great arcade style games, 1st party releases, and many of the other excellent offerings on the Game Boy (Not to mention the myriad ways to enjoy the library with different color options, various tv out options, and compatibility across the entire Game Boy line from the original unlit monochrome screen to the modern backlit display of the SP revision), I wouldn't be shocked in 5 years time if his views on this handheld will have taken a complete 180.

There's something here for everyone.

Leo is right, give our host some time, especially as he said it was on his radar screen for 2014 just a few weeks ago. Yes the Gameboy has its spot in gaming history, but the whole portable section is a huge undertaking. Maybe he could use some help, like for the C64. Even setting up some way to loan him games might help.

Many of these portables, like the Game Gear and NDS, have vast libraries, and he still has to keep up with new portable releases as well. I look at this site as mostly a console place anyway. Like NewModelArmy, I grew up with a Commodore 64, and its place in gaming history is just as important as the Gameboy, but reviews are uncommon even with help. If we start nagging for what is not here, its endless - where are famicom games, or european videopac or ZX80 games, or Apple II or PC or mobile or more RPGs, or the Mattel and Coleco LED portables or Game and Watch that all predate the Gameboy or whatever. Did you notice that even the number of consoles has grown, not just from the new ones but adding classics like the Fairchild. Where else on the net can you chat about the Channel F or Bally Astrocade?

I look forward to the Gameboy reviews, and I like reading which GB, GBC and GBA games people rave about, and I am sure we are in store for some great conversations about them this year.

It's still on my radar.

I was going to break the Game Boy section into three (GB, GBC, GBA) but since I'm reviewing the games on a Super Game Boy (SNES), I suspect the GB and GBC games are going to look pretty much the same.  Should I group those together?

Actually that might make things easier, because I'm still trying to "gauge" what is a good and bad Game Boy Original game.  I really didn't play these much back in the day.  The first set of reviews kind of calibrates the standards, so I need to make sure I play enough of these games.

Any advice would be welcome.

There's such a small library of game boy color games that I think it would be fine to group them with original gb games

Looking forward to them, but as the Offspring say, you gotta keep em separated: GB, GBC, and GBA.  They are different systems, and shouldn't be grouped because "they look the same" or cross-compatible.

This argument on whether or not to group the GB and GBC together came up when he originally asked this. I was pretty down with grouping GB and GBC games together and then separating the GBA into its own category.

Some original Game Boy games I would recommend:

Super Mario Land 1, 2 and 3

Castlevania: The Adventure

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Castlevania Legends

Donkey Kong Land

Battletoads(not to be confused with Battletoads in Ragnarok's World which is port of the NES version, this one is a totally different game)
