"Batman" (NES) re-evaluation?

I played this again the other night on an emulator after not having played it in years.

The production values are terrific. The soundtrack is excellent and the graphics look great for NES. It's only hurt by some occasional slowdown. Despite not being able to change direction in midair during jumps, the control is also pretty good. At least you have a lot of control over jump distance... slight taps for short jumps and hold the button in for longer jumps.

As for the difficulty level, it is challenging, but not impossible. The infinite continues help. I managed to get to level 5-1 after a few hours of play, and that's where I gave up. The relentless difficulty is what makes it feel so good when you finally do make it past the harder parts. Much of the challenge involves mastering wall-jumping. By the time you get to the last stage, you have to be an expert at it.

You said that beating it "will take some serious will and determination". That's true, but I would consider that a virtue and not a detriment. But you do have to put in some effort. When you do make it to near the end of the game after all that struggle and then give up, you might not feel like playing it again for awhile.

Game should get at least "B", I think. It's above average in most respects. You gave higher grades to even tougher NES games such as "Ghosts n Goblins" and "Battletoads". I can't get past the second stage in GNG no matter how much I continue, and the clunky controls don't help.

This is pretty much a spot on assessment of the game.  Batman is a great a challenging game on the NES...it is in no way average.  For me it's at the very least a B.  It's much closer to a B+ or A- though.

Yeah, it's a great action game. It also gets much easier with some practice. I'm at the point where I can make it to level 5-1 fairly quickly, and that's where it gets tough. The jumps you have to pull off right before the final bosses are insane hard and I keep messing up.

I've made it to the Joker a few times now, but I couldn't beat him. I came close. I wish it would just stay at the Joker when he kills you. It's annoying having to replay that level.

To me a good view of the NES Batman game is from the Cinemassacre guys, James and Mike:

Warning for explicit language.

To me this my favorite way to play games.  Just you and a friend sitting on the couch...shooting the breeze and trying to finish a game.  Games don't need to be multi-player to be enjoyed by a couple people.  You just don't get this same type of experience through online gaming.  To me videogames were meant to be enjoyed in the company of others.

One of my favorite NES games, beat it as a kid, years and years ago. Hard game, took a lot of dedication,
defeating the Joker felt like a major achievement. I don't think high difficulty should be considered detrimental,
overcoming challenges, that's what gaming is all about! Great graphics and musics, atmospheric ambiance, highly
playable and fantastic villains (Firebug..), this is A, possibly A+ material!

I really like Batman on the NES as well. It's a great game. I think high difficulty isn't a bad thing as long as the game is fair. If the controls are good (which IMO this game's is) and the challenge isn't oppressive I can really like the game.

What is the deal with the electrified level?  It looks like there's no way to make certain jumps without falling into the electricity.

Watch this video...I think the part you're talking about is at 4:15-5:30 mins.  You just need to really master the wall jump.

I figured it out, but that solution seems to defy the law of physics.

A few other observations:
- jumps tend to drift in mid-air
- can't walk on gears?
- sometimes falls the wrong way when hit
- toggling between weapons tough in heat of battle
- music sounds pretty generic
- wish it showed your score and lives at all times (not just when you pause).
- feels like Ninja Gaiden with Batman character and cut-scenes.
