NES Popeye

To start, this site is AWESOME.  I think I've read every review (definitely all of the classic system reviews)

I tried NES Popeye on my emulator based on your recommendation. While it is great, I wouldn't call it arcade perfect because of a few differences:

  • The Sea Hag stays in the top right and tosses bouncing skulls.  In the arcade version, she appears on the sides and throws beer bottles.  That is the most major difference I saw in the gameplay.  It changes your strategy
  • If you compare the two, the NES version is actually much easier to control, especially up and down the stairs
  • The graphical style is different.  Don't get me wrong, it's great (maybe back in the day I would have called it arcade perfect), but it doesn't have the smooth, drawn look of the arcade.  There may actually be more animation frames in the NES version
  • I think the sound is exactly the same as the arcade
I agree with the "A" rating though.

Keep up the great work on this site!

Brundle,
Welcome aboard and thanks for the info.
I like to hear when my review hits the mark, and the subtle details you provided were interesting (at least to people who frequent a site like this).
I'm not sure if I ever even played the arcade version of Popeye, but the NES version makes me feel like I'm playing an arcade game.

I agree.  It absolutely does.  If you have access to MAME, try out the arcade version.  The NES version is the best home version that I have tried, but those skulls totally change things up.  They get me killed because I chase them thinking that they are hearts.  Not a bad thing by any means, but it really does change the game it bit

I use sites like yours to get ideas of games to play on my emulator cabinet because I have so many freakin' thousand of them from different systems

Have you ever considered reviewing arcade games via MAME?
