How would a Splatoon review play out?

Postby eneuman96 » June 9th, 2015, 8:50 am

So I, like many people, am enjoying Splatoon. Considering the success it's had (relative to the Wii U's sales, anyway), it's almost inevitable that it'll get a review on this site. But considering the stance the VGC has on DLC and online modes, Splatoon seems like it would be a tough game to review.

Firstly, although the singleplayer campaign is actually very creative and much better designed than those of most other shooters, it's obviously not meant to carry the game all by itself. Judging the game almost entirely on its single-player mode makes even less sense in the context of Splatoon than, say, Call of Duty.

Secondly, the online multiplayer, while I consider it great fun, probably wouldn't mesh well with the VGC's sensibilities. The only local multiplayer mode the game currently has is nowhere near as fun as the online mode due to being very limited.

Thirdly, since he isn't big on patches and DLC, the updates Splatoon is getting over the next few months probably wouldn't even figure into the review. Reviewing Splatoon as it is would make the game come off as sparse, which it currently is despite how fun it is, and would ignore the improvements supposedly heading its way.

How do you think the VGC would tackle Splatoon, assuming he ever does?

Can you imagine the Critic's review with the game not connected to the Internet to at least try the multiplayer?

F--

Yes, that's right F minus, minus

The more I play the game the more annoyed I get with it. I'm not a fan of the two girl squids that tell me what 2 maps are available to play at any given time. There are only two maps in the line up, fair enough. I'm not a high school guy or girl and really don't need to listen to a squid take on that.

It's fun but you have to slog through the splat levels to unlock some other mode. I'm not even sure if the other mode is fun to play.

If you count the online as part of the review then I'd give it a C+. It shows promise but the limited maps you'll play over and over and over get old, real quick. If they can fix the annoyances then it's an easy B game.

I think an F- would be way too harsh considering how creative the singleplayer levels are while they last. Also, looking at the Call of Duty reviews, he actually DOES mention the online multiplayer, but he really downplays it in favor of talking about the singleplayer campaign, which a lot of people never even play. The multiplayer and singleplayer portions of Splatoon are the meat and potatoes, respectively, of the game, and downplaying one in favor of the other wouldn't be fair to the game.

Well considering it actually has a single player mode I'm pretty sure the critic will give it around a C. There doesn't seem to be a ton of meat to this game right now and I doubt that the critic is going to judge it on anything other than what came on the disc (I can't blame him). When this game drops in price (if/whenever/whatever) I'll probably pick it up. I can't imagine that this game will hold on to its price since it is a new IP series focused on multiplayer... If there is one Nintendo title that manages to break tradition and drop in value (at least for a while) it's probably this one.

I picked up one of those Best Buy gaming cards where you get 20% off all new games for 2 years. I figured I would buy at least 4 new games over the next 2 years to easily make up for the $30 card. Plus with Amazon now charging me tax this seemed like a good idea. Once you sign up you also get an email for $5 off your next game. So, the first $60 game you buy is $43 plus tax. That's not too shabby.

But I definitely agree $60 is a bit steep. It's fun but like I side I have my pet peeves with it.

Oh, the 20% off thing also applies to Disney Infinity characters. I assume that it also applies to Amiibos and Skylander stuff for anyone that cares.

Okay, now, I'd like to see the Critic's take on Splatoon.

C'mon, you know you want to try it!

It's fun...

You've got 5 maps to play and if you sit for an hour or two you'll get to see a whopping 2 maps. That's if you go online. Else you can play the single player, which isn't all that bad.

C'mon give it a splat!

<I'm done, I promise>
